“Another Fantastic Stay at the Wanslea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

This is the third time we have stayed at the Wanslea and for three nights on this occasion. It gets better every time, spotlessly clean and the beds are soooo comfortable, a great night's sleep. Richard (the owner) is a great host, really welcoming. His staff are extremely pleasant and accommodating and served a great breakfast. We stayed in the African room and our friends stayed in the Arabian room (we have stayed in both). They have spa baths in both rooms which is great after a nice walk to Troutbeck or to Hawkeshead or on the local fell walks. Ideally located, just a short walk away from the lovely restaurants and cosy pubs with real ales! A great place to stay. Our favourite in Ambleside. We will be returning asap.

Room Tip: African or Arabian a must. The rooms are much nicer and spacious than the pictures display. We too...

I had booked a standard room as it was at a reduced rate, I can see why now! State of the decor was very poor and the room had a 'medicinal' smell and was cold even with the heating on. The condition of the ensuite was incredibly poor. I was taken a back when breakfast had to be pre ordered and had only a half hour window in which to be served. Didn't sleep on the bed but it felt very rickety. Owner was ok but not the charmer mentioned by other reviewers.

Couldn't get into the guest house I normally use, Newstead, Windermere, as I left my booking too late. For the same price as Wanslea, Newstead is an absolute palace. Wouldn't recommend Wanslea.

Finding Wanslea was easy as it was right opposite Hayes, perfect for a quick look around while deciding what to do with the day. Situated very close to the shops and the lake. The lakeside chip shop was really nice and with the B&B only 2min walk away, you don't have to trek too far on a full stomach :) The host was professional and friendly and made us feel very welcome. We were on the top floor (which I liked as it is very grand yet homely inside) in the Arabia room. Even though the room was a good size, it still felt warm and cosy, the 'canopy(?)' over the bed made you feel tucked in and comfortable for the night. Also in our room are little lights in the ceiling to resemble stars as you discuss the day before drifting off to sleep. I must mention the little biscuits that are in the room are really nice! We slept very well and breakfast was nice and relaxing, we felt tended to without being overwhelmed, being sat next to the window was a nice way to plan our next adventure. We would definitely recommend and would most likely stay there again if we were in the area :)

Room Tip: For a cosy night, we recommend the Arabia room :)

A very comfortable and welcoming 3 night stay in an excellent central location. Clean and well equipped rooms with pleasant en-suite shower facilities. The owner made an extra special effort to ensure a gluten free breakfast, providing not only gluten free sausages but toast too. We very much enjoyed our stay.

We stayed at this guest house in February and would definitely stay again, we stayed in the four poster room on the top floor which was comfortable, The guest house is very well situated and the staff were very helpful. Breakfast was great. We will definitely be returning.

Clean, tidy and well presented. Perfectly located for walks, shopping and eating without having to drive. Various rooms to choose from, we stayed in the Africa Room, great spa bath, which is just what you want after a hard days yomp! Full cooked breakfast was perfect, not greasy, stodgy, just right. Good rates too. So much so, we're going back in two weeks time.
Don't hesitate, you won't be disappointed.
