“Warm welcome at Hillsdale”

We booked our stay at Hillsdale online from New Zealand a few months before we (2 adults and a child) travelled to the UK. From the start, George was welcoming, helpful and efficient.
When we arrived, George found us a parking space (a real plus in central Ambleside!) and gave us a warm welcome. We shared a triple room at the top of the hotel with a fine view up to the Loughrigg Fell. It was typical of the place that my 6 year old son's bed had a soft toy gorilla placed on it to welcome him. Also, that at breakfast next morning, George ensured my son received a small cooked breakfast made exactly to his order.
Hillsdale is a charming, but older, building in the heart of Ambleside. So if you want an elevator, air-conditioning and a huge room, it may not be for you. However, if you are looking for fantastic value, comfort and charm, and the best of hosts then I cannot recommend it highly enough.
We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to all.

When it comes to B&Bs I’m fussy … the Hillsdale met the challenge. If you want a great B&B in a perfect location, I can’t recommend this place more. The owners were friendly and very helpful. Their tips on dining and walking were spot on, and we felt more like friends than customers. The room was very clean and recently remodeled, finished with a new bathroom (with a great shower) and even had a nice LCD flatscreen TV. There were umbrellas to use on a rainy night we were there. There were passes to a great nearby healthclub with a pool. The breakfast was tasty and filling, and I noticed that a couple beside us had a vegetarian meal. The one we had was ‘full English’, but we could also help ourselves to cold options like cereal, yogurt and some fresh fruit. Probably the best part, however, was the location. We’ve been to many areas in the Lakes, but Ambleside won our hearts with its charm and offer of great walks and views. It can be busy (thankfully they acquired a few parking spots just up the street) but the town is lovely with a great selection of restaurants and pubs and shops, all of which are at your doorstep. Hoping to stay again.

“Friendly, well-situated b&b”

Hillsdale in Ambleside

We had room seven right at the top of the house. It was very nicely decorate. It was clean and comfortable. The owners were very friendly and the food was great. Well situated for eating out. Only downside is parking, you can park overnight but the it's disk parking outside and you have to move you vehicle, which is ok if you're going walking anyway or going for a day trip. Not so good if you want to explore Ambleside itself, although they do suggest places to park. Other B&B's I have been to have given you residents permitsor something similar to overcome this problem.

“Lovely stay at Hillsdale Guest House”

Hillsdale in Ambleside

We stayed at Hillsdale Guest House in Ambleside during early June 2005. We had two lovely, well-decorated, quiet, clean, double en-suite rooms. The guest house is centrally located in Ambleside, and the hosts were very friendly and welcoming. The owner even learned our names, and was very helpful with travel suggestions. The breakfasts were delicious, although we missed some fresh fruit. The one en-suite bathroom was extremely small, while the other bedroom's bathroom was more reasonable. There is no off-street parking, which can be a bit of a hassle during the day. We were given vouchers for a nearby spa, which we thoroughly enjoyed. I'd easily stay there again.
