“Snacks in a Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

Developed over the years into quite a trendy place to stop for a break and a bite to eat or just a drink. Unfortunately the stonemasons' have gone and with them some beautifully crafted slate objects but the food is good - if a little pricey - and there is something for everyone. The location by the river en route to or from Ambleside, Elterwater, Coniston or Grasmere is superb and the short walk through the adjoining woods to the waterfalls is always a pleasure. It would be nice to think that someone will buy the old slate company's buildings and turn them into luxury accommodation but who knows - perhaps the "Sober Drake"?

“Favourite place to eat in Lake District!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2013 via mobile

We love Chester's, been customers for donkey's years (remember the old days when it was Kirkstone Galleries?!) and today's visit was no exception. The food's always delicious; fantastic flatbreads & salads, plus cakes to make your eyes (and waistline) pop! Excellent, friendly atmosphere too, with pleasant people and the glorious wood-fired oven to gaze into as you wait at the counter. One 'wee' thing that we've felt for ages really does need improving is the gents/disabled loo! A single one, when it's busy (and that's every day), is simply not enough. And today we found something weird happening with the parking system- the normal circular route's been blocked off by a low stone wall. People entering (the now 'small cars' only area at the front) are wondering what on earth is going on. (And drivers tend to assume their car counts as small, when it's really, really not..!) Though it won't deter us in the slightest from our regular visits, we really, really hope this will be an experiment rather than a permanent change!

“Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2013

Having been out for a long walk this was a perfect stop off. It was a lovely warm day so sat outside on the terrace right next to the river. There was a great selection of cakes and a good menu to choose from. It also has an inside sitting area for not so pleasant days as well as an adjoining shop selling good quality gifts. The location is definitely what makes it so good. Have recommended it to friends and family already. Cant wait to sit out on the terrace again some time soon.
