“Great breakfasts in a good hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

If you are in the area for walking, then one of the major pluses at The Regent Hotel is the way you get to start the day - the cooked breakfasts are well executed and come in a variety of sizes and add-on, all at no extra cost. From a simple rasher or two of bacon up to a full-on mountain of food, you can be assured of filling up with enough fuel to take on any walk. And while the options are not extensive there's enough here to cater for veggies/vegans too.

Our room was a Garden room (#43) and was very quiet, well appointed and comfortable. My partner had an issue with the rather soft mattress but overall I couldn't fault much. Locationwise, it's good for exploring Windermere but with only one pub nearby, you might end up walking the half mile or so into town in order to find the better restaurants and bars in the area (http://tinyurl.com/98h7c2u).

Not cheap, but not terrible value either.

Room Tip: The Garden Rooms are the other side of the car park, and therefore quieter (and larger) than the one...

This hotel has a lovely entrance and excellant staff, all of whom were very polite and helpful at all times.

Our room was a little disappointing, we occupied room 16 and found it to be on the small side, it was not possible to sleep with the window open as this room is on the road side of the hotel. The bathroom has a few minor points that could do with some attention, the problem being that the fan is not adequate, there are traces of paint coming from the ceiling above the bath taps.

The breakfast was lovely and waiter service was a nice change.

A nice hotel if you could choose a bigger room away from the road.

We stayed at The Regent on a 2 night dinner, bed and breakfast deal. As it was our first wedding anniversary, we opted for the 'Sail Loft'... which proved to be a very private hideaway, private from the main hotel, with it's own access... and a very cosy retreat after dinner, with a DVD borrowed from reception.

The food was really good, especially the breakfasts (I can recommend the 'Fell Walker'... a hearty full english with a crumpet).

The only thing that let the hotel down was the slightly confused service at dinner. Our soup/sorbet was missed on the second night (we didn't mind too much as we were full), and we were left at the table when other guests had been escorted into the lounge for tea and coffee. Nothing major, just a lack of communication. At other times, the staff were very helpful.

If you're looking for a romantic hideaway, in a quiet part of the Lakes, but within walking distance of a town like Ambleside, the Sail Loft at The Regent Hotel is pretty perfect!

Stayed here on business and through I had passed it many times had never stayed before. I was given a garden room, with a king size bed, bath robes and a private balcony. The room also had a very comfortable lounge area with a settee and an excellent W.I.F.I connection. The dinner menu has just a few starters but a very good choice of maincourses. I had the Morecambe Bay shrimps and the slow cooked beef, both of which were beautifully presented and very tasty. The breakfast menu was extensive and the help yourself buffet for starters had everthing you could think of. The staff were very friendly and attentive and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

We have been going to this hotel for about 15 years and have never been disappointed. It may be a little expensive for some people's liking but the quality of the food in the restaurant for both breakfast and dinner make it worthwhile to pay that little extra. We always prefer to stay in one of the Garden rooms which are set back from the main hotel. These are well appointed rooms with high standards of furnishing and are very peaceful and relaxing. We even had the oppurtunity to sit out on the balcony as the weather proved favourable (at last). We have stayed in the main hotel and courtyard rooms on previous visits and have never been disappointed with these rooms either.
The service in the restaurant and newly refurbished bar area is second to none. We found the welcome by the Hewitt members of family as warm as ever.
The Regent is set nicely for easy access to Waterhead Bay and the various activities that commence from there. Ambleside is a leisurely 10 minute stroll away.
There are a number of good walks of varying standards from Ambleside and the hotel are very accomodating in offering advice and information if required. You will find details of the easier walks on the back of the breakfast menu.
if you want a really relaxing break and don't mind paying a little bit extra this is the place for you.

Room Tip: The Garden rooms (40 to 44) offer a quiter setting away from the main hotel building

Me and my wife satayed here for a 2 night break to celebrate my birthday. We upgraded to the Latterbarrow Garden Suite which was a nice big suite on the corner with views of the Lake. It has a separate room off the main room with bunk beds in a closet that we did't really need so kept the door closed most of the time. This would good for a family though!
The cleanliness of the room was excellent as was the comfort of the very large bed. The room was spacious and well appointed with nice funishings. It did however lack a little bit of storage we thought and there was nowhere to hang up your coat except in the bathroom! There was a nice shower room but surprisingly no bath. Small points but just enough to prevent us giving the maximum 5 stars for the room.
The communal areas of the hotel were immaculate and the breakfast was superb. A restaurant breakfast of the highest order. Service at the bar and breakfast was impecable also, so 5 stars here. Overall a very well run hotel in a great location (0.8 miles to Ambleside) with nice rooms. If I could give 4.5 stars that's what I'd give and would definitely return.

Some years ago we had a very pleasant stay in this hotel. This September we decided to pay a return visit as we were confident of the pleasant experience being repeated. Sadly this was not the case.
Our appointed room's furnishings were rather tired, and for a mature couple the shower as part of the bath was a difficulty, especially as there was no handle on the wall to assist you over the rather high sided bath.We reckon that this was an accident waiting to happen.
Our dinner on the first night was reasonable enough but after that it was down hill.
The food was never served on hot plates and the quality was never up to scratch.
It appeared to us that after the Sunday evening the Chef had changed.
Despite intimating on the menu that if you were staying on continuous nights if you could not find something to your taste then the Chef would prepare something of your choice if at all possible. My wife decided that she would like a portion of the haddock that was on the breakfast menu for her main course at dinner. This was duly served to her without any form of presentation and as if she had no right to make such a request. Coq O Vin as served by their Chef was not my interpretation of this dish. I was served a piece of dried chicken on a bed of mash with a few mushrooms. Their haddock fish cakes were tasteless and haddock is not tasteless!
The straw that broke the camel's back was our breakfast on the morning we were leaving. I asked for a banana and was served with a black mottled skinned banana that was black on the inside and totally inedible. They would have been better to have intimated that they did not have any.
No I am not making this up - we were totally disappointed at what we were getting for what we were paying. We will certainly not be back.

Room Tip: Keep clear of room no.2

We are really saddened by this review you gave us no indication what so ever while you were staying with us that there was any problems other than the bath in your room had no grab handles, which you spoke to receptionist about and she showed you alternative rooms at your request for when you visited us again.

Fortunately we have plenty of regular vistors that visit time and time again and are very happy.
