“The perfect hotel......”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2010

The Waterhead is a superb hotel, if you want quality, excellent service and food that is cooked to perfection then this is the place for you.
We stayed for two nights 23rd to 25th July and were fortunate enough to be upgraded to a luxury room. The room was on the ground floor with a lovely view overlooking the garden and lake. The room was spacious with high ceilings and had a TV with DVD player for which you could borrow DVD’s from reception free of charge. There was internet connection, a hairdryer, telephone and a wide range of complimentary tea and coffee which was topped up every day. Plenty of wardrobe space, and an ironing board & iron tucked away in its own cupboard which was a nice touch. The king size bed was so comfortable we didn’t want to get up in the morning but of course if we didn’t we would miss the fantastic breakfast!
The hotel is situated across a road from the lake, but didn’t pose a problem as it was fairly quiet. Nearby just a few yards away you can book one of the many cruises which take you the full length of Lake Windermere for a reasonable price.
The Waterhead Hotel is ideally situated for easy access to Coniston, Grasmere, Keswick, Bowness & Kendal and so makes an excellent base. Ambleside town is about half a mile away within easy walking distance or you can drive as there's ample parking space.
We thoroughly recommend this hotel, it’s a four star and it deserves every single one.

I stayed here last weekend with my teenage son. The price was £191.00 per night for a tiny room. The only wifi was in the reception area, the packed lunch was missing items and not in a " complimentary insulated bag" as stated on the order form, it came in a paper bag. The food was mediocre and the service was terrible. As an expat of 25 years, I've been to some really bad places and also some really brilliant ones, this belongs in the former. The time between courses was at one point only 5 mins and 20 seconds ( my son timed it). Ideally there should be more time between courses.
For the money it certainly was not worth it and I will not be going there again, let alone recommend it to my friends.

Location is brilliant although it rained for our entire stay.

This is the best hotel I've stayed in in every way. Our room had a lake view and was bright and modern and the huge bed was extremely comfy. The bathroom was lovely and spotlessly clean, the view across the lake wonderful and the breakfast choice was excellent. We stayed one night for my partner's birthday and were lucky to have some great sunny weather. Everything was perfect, the staff professional but friendly and the hotel had a very relaxed feel. We will definitely be staying again.

A really lovely hotel. We stayed from the 20-25 June (adding on an extra night as we were having such a lovely time). We had a luxury room with Lake view, which was superb (though there is a road between the hotel and the Lake, which is not obvious from the photos on their website). Our room was just off reception but there was no noise or disturbance at all. The room was generously sized with high ceilings and kingsize bed. There was generous storage with plenty of wooden hangers and a space to hang full length dresses. The bathroom had a very high quality finish with a wide, long and deep bath and a cascading shower which, though noisy, was very nice. There was a window box off our room, and it appeared all of the other rooms too, and fresh fruit and complementary still and sparkling water with ice bucket (which I used for keeping a little jug of fresh milk provided on request for use with the tea & coffee). A very good selection of teas, coffee and hot chocolate in the room, with local fresh gingerbread from Grasmere replenished daily. There was also underfloor heating in the room and bathroom (not that we required it as the weather was favourable). The bar and restaurant were excellent with very good service. There was a lovely garden off the bar and we had lunch there too one day, which was also very good. This garden was a wonderful area to chill out before dinner in the dipping sunshine overlooking the Lake. We enjoyed all the dishes we had in the restaurant (the blade of beef and the plaice were particularly worthy of comment), and the bar served quality wines and champagne by the glass. The staff were friendly but not intrusive. They provided some useful information on local walks and parking in nearby towns. There was also a collection of DVDs that could be borrowed free of charge. The women’s toilets by the restaurant and bar played a recording of Beatrix Potter stories, which was an interesting but lovely local touch. There were a few guests with babies or young children, and they seemed to be well accommodated. Everything was very clean and fresh looking in our room and the public areas of the hotel. The location was great for getting boats out onto Windermere as it's right by the Ambleside piers (though a mile or so walk into Ambleside itself - local 'green' transportation available - which we didn't use - for only £1.50 pp single every 20 mins from the piers). Our only criticism was that their wifi area was extremely restricted (to reception or the seating area immediately below, and presumably the business centre which we didn’t use). It was supposed to be available in ‘all public areas’ but certainly wasn’t available in the main bar or restaurant on an iphone.

Having recently stayed at the Waterhead for two nights I have to agree with many other contributors on this site. We have stayed in many hotels but this one has to rate among our favourites. However, we did have the bonus of a special deal.
STAFF: They were all very efficient and friendly - from the informative receptionists to the restaurant staff and cleaners who seemed happy in their work and offered help when I was taking luggage back to the car.
THE ROOM: This is the first hotel I have stayed in which provided full size toiletries in the bathroom and the lovely big fluffy towels and heated towel rail were an added bonus. The bedroom was equipped with a trouser press, ironing board and iron, flat screen TV, DVD player with complimentary DVD's available from reception, ipod docking station and FREE wi-fi with cable ready to plug in. There was a large selection of tea, coffee, chocolate etc plus a cafetiere with ground coffee and good size cups and saucers (all in well designed storage areas). The bed was big and comfortable with a turndown service every evening and plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. Bottles of water and an ice bucket were also provided.
RESTAURANT: We ate in the restaurant on our first night and we had a really lovely meal with good service but rolls/bread would have been a nice touch. There is an extensive breakfast menu and although the buffet table was crammed full of lovely food I can highly recommend the grill!
PUBLIC AREAS: I loved the quirkiness of the Beatrix Potter stories in the super clean downstairs loos but I was never in there long enough to hear a full story! Bar and lounge areas were always clean and tidy. Pleasant gardens for snacks or just to sit and enjoy the sunshine and view of the lake.
Oh I nearly forgot . . .
LOCATION: Fantastic!! Just a 15 minute stroll from Ambleside, a minute to the Lake cruises and some lovely walks close by.
Sam is now in our grandchildrens' bedroom - good luck with the charity and thank you for a very enjoyable stay. Great team spirit - I hope their pay reflects this!!
