“Really... don't bother”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2013 via mobile

Stayed two nights at the hotel. The room was cleanish, red hot though and once you got into bed was bitten by lice which were in the bed. Breakfast is awful, staff don't care. Asked about how to order a cooked breakfast and was told to go to another hotel and buy it or the Wetherspoons pub. Reception staff also didn't have a clue what they were doing. Oddly there is no lift from the street to the reception neither. Have reported hotel to the Health and Safety Execuitive at Hull City Council. Last comment, it seems you can also buy rooms by "the hour" as we were helpfully told by a member of the cleaning staff.

Great fast check in, though were not given any information on facilities or meal times.

Room on first inspection was okay, it was only on closer inspection it was clear that the hotel was of poor quality.
Drawers broken on dressing table.
No valence sheet on bed, and bed base torn in places.
Hair dryer looked so old I didn't want to touch it.
Window stuck open.
Head end of bed lower than foot end, this was made worse by the very thin pillows (only one each)

Although the heating was off room was incredibly hot, too hot to sleep comfortable.

Our room overlooked the main road, and hotel is on the corner of the road that has Hulls main A&E Department. There was a constant stream of traffic all night, and noisy drunks till about 3am.

After possibly the worst nights sleep of my life I was woken to the bright sunlight coming through the curtains that were not wide enough for the window.

We eventually gave up and went to breakfast, no hot food available (despite the sign out side the hotel offering an all day breakfast). Breakfast consisted of small boxes of cereal, hot cross buns and cheap pain de chocolate, bread and fruit. The toaster was a little dodgy with guests getting their hot cross buns stuck, a pair of metal tongs was provided by the "waitress" for the customer to attempt to remove them.

They staff wear no uniform and look scruffy and unprofessional.

Room Tip: Book somewhere else.

My son and I have just returned from a 2 night stay at The Gilson, after reading some of the reviews I was a litle concerned. However I needn't have worried.

Reception
Booking in was simple and painless, the receptionist was very helpfull. We were offered 2 key cards with no problem. The only slight critisism I would have is we were not told what time breakfast was, on enquiry was told again no problems.

Rooms
We had a twin room that was huge with a flat screen TV and multi channels. It was spotlessy clean and towels changed daily. The beds were comfy and sheets spotless. The bathroom had a bath and a shower a little outdated but again very clean. Yes, the room was a little noisy but what do you expect in the centre of Hull between the Hospital and the Police Station!

Breakfast
Breakfast was very basic, toast, rolls cereals and fruit juice, tea and coffee. The lady organising the breakfast was very friendly and helpfull and worked hard to ensure everything was topped up and tables cleaned and cleared.

Bar
Again a lovely chap behind the bar, very reasonable prices, and clean and tidy.

Overall
A lovely homely hotel, yes some things are a little outdated, and a lick of paint might not go amiss but I would stay here again. It is 2 minutes from the station and the shopping centres. Also, within walking distance of the KC Statium.

Stayed here for one night and thank goodness thats all it was. Booked through booking.com and rate included early check in/late check out which I confirmed before hand with hotel direct so should have been able to check in at 12noon and also complimentary champagne on arrival, which never materialised. Arrived 12.30 to be told check in was not till 2pm. Told reception had early check in to which reply was we were full last night so room may not be ready. Were given key to room which was ok apart from terrible smell of stale smoke, infact whole hotel has the same stench. No soap or shower gel in room and pointed this out to reception on our way out and were told it would be rectified, it wasnt.

Breakfast was ok but wouldnt like to be battling for the toaster with everyone else.

Location is good but parking poor, to be fair web site does say this. Parked at Princes Quay car park and cost wasnt too bad.

Dont think I would stay here again it is just a simple budget hotel that could do with a face lick and a bit of fumigation

We have stayed at the Gilson on two occasions. The rooms are basic, but clean. the hotel bar is reasonably priced. The staff are helpful. The staff are helpful. We used the hotel as a base, there is a good chinese and a good indian restaurant nearby. If you would rather have the luxuries of a a 5* hotel you will have to look elsewhere but if you want to save your money to spend during the day and evening, this is the place to go.

The hotel manager is very helpful and caring, which I greatly appreciated. The hotel was convenient for my work. It's basic, but clean, and the manager has good plans for the future. There was no soap in the bathroom - was there supposed to be?

My son and I stayed for 1 month and found the Hotel very conveniently located in the city center, and very budget priced. Very comfortable Twin Room, and friendly staff and very proactive Hotel Manager. Continental Breakfast ample, with cereal, toast, sweet bread, muffins, fruit, coffee, tea without restriction. Wifi especially good in the room we stayed in. A very enjoyable, economic, and comfortable stay and recommend to anybody.

Room Tip: Choose a room nearest to the wifi hub, for excellent reception.
