“Great Little Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2012

Stayed at The Gardeners for a couple of nights last week and was really shocked. Great set up with a traditional feel bar and a really good bar menu. Food served till late and a fantastic conservatory area to watch the kids play in the onsite park. Food arrived quickly and tasted amazing - definately homecooked and hearty!!! We stayed in one of the family rooms - excellent as we have two youngsters and they slept in the sofa bed downstairs while my wife and I stayed in the upper level. All in all fantastic value for money and would definately stay again when in the area.

Room Tip: Family rooms great with kids and spa rooms available for something a little more romantic!

We stayed one saturday night while travelling along the East Coast. What a gem this place is - lovely rooms with great service...and very well priced! We had intended to make an early start on the Sunday morning but we were so relaxed we stayed for Sunday dinner! It was great - in fact it was the best Sunday dinner I've ever had! I'd go back just to eat there! In fact, looking at my rubbish Sunday dinner, I wish I was there now!

Lovely countryside location - quiet and relaxed but oh so friendly. The manager, David, was very helpful during our stay. We stayed in one of the superior lodges which was spacious and clean. We ate in the pub - the food was lovely. I had a huge lasagne and my partner had a fish and chips. Well priced and high quality. I would certainly reccomend The Gardeners to anyone, and I will be returning without a doubt.

Used the hotel as a stopover on the way to north yorks coast - chose it as it for its rural location and the fact that digs were allowed. Rooms were lovely and spotless - loved the downstairs separate lounge area, perfect and great price.
Just felt it a massive shame that we were not able to eat inside because we had our dog with us - thankfully the weather was just about bearable for us to eat outside - food was fab.
I understand that not all places are dog friendly, but as the 'hotel' side was, wrongly assumed the pub side would be too. The more annoying thing is that a good dog on a lead is far less of a nuisance than four screaming kids that we had to endure chasing inside and outside while we were eating!
Nice meal, one pint and then trip to the local shop to have a drink in our room, with dog, in peace and at a fraction of the outlay!

Signs up in the rooms state that the hotel is now under new management and that "the hotel is under a much needed refurbishment" and requesting customers to be "patient during the works".

I found that the rooms are certainly overdue for refurbishment and that maintenance issues have not been kept up to date. Critical things such as no hot water in a half of the available of rooms due to a boiler failure and no option of heating in an unseasonable June. The staff were unable to call in an emergency heating engineer to fix the hot water problem.

The two rooms that I used during my stay (relocated due to no hot water), had a number of problems including inoperative telephones (both rooms), loose main door inner handle which came off in my hand making it almost impossible to exit the room, TV not tuned in and lack of coat hangers in the wardrobe / hanging areas. However the rooms are well proportioned and generally much larger than the normal "euro -room"

The General Manager was out of the country in Lanzarote on holiday, leaving two very able and cheerful bar/restaurant members of staff who were clearly very busy looking after the 20 or so guests in the bar & restaurant. They were unable to respond on a number of occasions to the "kitchen food ready" bell as they were busy preparing drinks and endeavouring to resolve the hotel issues. It is amazing that they remained outwardly calm and cheerful.

The food was of very variable standard. The "homemade" dishes were obviously not prepared in the restaurant kitchen, but bought in, as is the case in many local pubs/restaurants.

I selected the fish cakes as a started and these were very tasty, full of fish and served on a bed of unassuming salad. This was followed by chicken tricolour which should be a succulent chicken breast stuffed with salmon & sun dried tomatoes served with new potatoes and a creamy sauce & seasonal vegetables. The chicken was dry and uninteresting and the creamy sauce the consistency of skimmed milk. In the second attempt, the sauce was marginally better, but the dry chicken made it unpalatable. Other guests faired a little better with fewer complaints although some side dishes arrive after the main course had almost been finished.

If it hadn't been for the two front of house staff members I think that I, along with some other guests may have checked out for alternative accommodation.

It is a shame that the management have not seen fit to prioritise the refurbishment rather that take a holiday. This hotel (more like a motel) is in an excellent location for accessing Hull and the surrounding areas with minimal traffic noise and secure & plentiful parking.

Room Tip: The upgraded rooms have a Jacuzzi bath but no stand up shower.

I recently stayed at this Inn with my hubby and two other couples, rooms are situated around the car park and it looks a bit like a motel. Our room was very comfy, with a very spacious bathroom. The two other couples had suites with spa baths for £10 extra - very luxurious. Only grip was that the hairdryers were kept at reception and you need to be quick to bag it. Disappointing meal on the Monday night , we had booked a table for 7.30 to be told that the kitchens close at 8pm, also felt that we had the last of the food which looked and tasted like it had been reheated several times. However, to be fair, it was the end of the bank holiday and we only paid £45 (no breakfast included).

Room Tip: Up grade for an extra £10 and get a two storey room with a spa bath.
