So the Best Western Hotel chain’s tag line is that they are ‘Hotel’s with personality’ and in the case of the BEST WESTERN PLUS Dover Marina Hotel & Spa we would have to agree! The building clearly has history and may even be listed? I can only assume that it may be since from the outside it does look a little neglected and the windows appear to be the original ones? Listed buildings have limitations on what can be updated, changed or removed. The bonus of the old Windows is that you can open them! The down side is that I imagine they can make the room very cold in the winter and during our stay they let in noise from the outside. It was very hot during our stay and so we were met with a double edged sword. Lose Sleep because it's hot and there is no Air-Con or lose sleep due to outside noise. Our room (Room 208) was above the Hotel’s Cafe/ Bar/ Main reception.
Our stay didn’t get off to the best of starts. We arrived early (only two hours before the permitted check-in time at 2pm) and on the off chance we asked if our room was ready. It wasn’t but the lady on the reception was very helpful in giving us our parking permit for the free parking at the rear of the Hotel behind the mini-shopping-complex. What let her and the hotel service down was that she expressly advised us to come back in 30 minutes as she would place ‘a rush on it’ on our room and it will be ready. Excellent we thought – how nice. We went and had lunch and actually were gone for an hour returning to the hotel at 1.30pm. The room however, was not ready. It was the same reception lady who then asked for the room to be made up as soon as possible via radio to house-keeping (whether she forgot the first time or had to ask again we don't know, either way is was disappointing, especially for the children). To be fair we have no real issue as check-in time was at 2pm and we were given the key to our room at 2pm but we believe that you shouldn’t give advice or you shouldn’t tell guests to return at a certain time if the rooms are still not going to be ready as we wouldn’t have come back. We had two young children so once we had parked the car, got our bags and them over to the hotel it’s not as simple as saying oh well we will just come back later again. Still the lobby was nice enough to wait in for the extra time.
We were booked into a family room which was a great size for us all and which had a excellent view over Dover beach! The family rooms are the biggest rooms at this hotel I believe so if space is important to you, it maybe working enquiring if this room type is free. We thought the wonky floors and uneven walls were just part of the charm of the building. The ‘adult’s bed’ however was lumpy and not that comfortable and the pillows need slinging out in our opinion as they are so worn out, our heads just slumped straight to the mattress. It was like having no pillow at all. The fold out bed was ok for our 2 and 5 year old but I cannot imagine it would have been comfortable for Teens. The TV was in an odd place for a family room but in all I think they made good use if the space. There was complimentary Tea and Coffee making facilities with biscuits which were handy for the early morning start. The free Wi-Fi was also useful and we had no issue getting connected from our room. The bathroom seemed old, dark and dirty looking for the room but was adequate. No power shower just the low pressure from the bath tap. The only real issue was there was just one shelve and that it was over the toilet. Not a place we like to store our tooth brushes personally!
The room service menu had the rarity of both selection and value for money. On site there is a Bar/ Cafe the Water Front restaurant and Water Front Spa. There is no pool at this hotel but it is just across the road from the beach. The location of the Hotel is great for shopping, city centre, Dover Castle, the Beach and the Ferry Port which was our main reason for being there.
We wouldn’t hesitate to stay again.
Family rooms are big and are located in the centre of the Hotel.
