“Excellent part of our history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2013

We visited Chatham on a cold wet day but that didn't deter our enjoyment of this wonderful historic dockyard.
Tickets are valid for 12 months, so good for additional visits if you live locally ( sadly we do not ). various events take place and the area is used for filming Call the Midwives, Selfridge's and other period dramas.
It took us 5 hours to look round and join in some of the tours ( theses do have to be booked on arrival. ). Seeing how rope was made was fascinating while the buildings themselves were incredible. The submarine tour was excellent and volunteer guide was very knowledgeable as they all were, obviously loving their job in keeping the history alive.
Food and drink in the Wheelwrights Restaurant was good and reasonably priced.
A very enjoyable and informative day at this once great dockyard.

“Chatham part 2”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

We first went here back in March when it was absolutely freezing and the ships were closed due to the adverse weather conditions. As the ticket lasts for 12 months from date of purchase we came back and finished our tour of the shipsand enjoyed a new attraction (Hearts of Oak) which wasn't there in March as it was under construction. Well done Chatham, it's really good.

“Informative, entertaining, challenging.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

Great day out! Actually, you;'d need much more than a day to see everything on show.

We commenced our visit with a timed tour of the Ropery, which was terrific, largely thanks to the guide who kept all ages involved, amused, enthralled. Terrific fun!

We next had a timed visit to HMS Oberon, the submarine on display [these are the only attractions which require pre-booking on entry]. Again, a really interesting visit whilst wondering how anyone could spend a considerable time in such cramped surroundings, let alone under wartime conditions. Anyone who has seen 'Das Boot' will appreciate just how claustrophobic the whole experience could be.

After these two highlights, we wandered around the other exhibits where there are so man things to see, including the buildings in which the exhibitions themselves are housed.

Be prepared to do a lot of walking and do talk to the volunteers - the pride in what they have achieved really comes across and they are so knowledgeable. Thank you, Chatham!

“Plenty to see.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

Very interesting piece of history. Guides very informative. Three ships to climb over. A WWII destroyer, a submarine and a Victorian gun-boat. Access all areas! Oh, it's a Captain's life for me on the gun-boat. Lots of displays about the Dockyard and its history and the people who worked there. Allow 4 - 5 hours for a good rummage around. Canteen quite good, too!
