“Friendly and Convenient”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2008

For those looking for a home away from home while in Canterbury please consider Ersham Lodge. We were provided very nice rooms, an excellent breakfast, and informed advice during our recent stay. All e-mail contacts were handled expeditiously and they even helped us tremendously with our airport transfers. The location can not be beat, five minutes and you are in Old Canterbury, five more and you are at the Cathedral. A nice place in a beautiful city.

Only last week we again visited the excellent Ersham Lodge Hotel only to find out that we were some of the last guests to stay with the owners Sheila and Steve. We have been using Ersham Lodge now for over eight years and we have always found the place to be very welcoming, superbly clean and like home from home.
The new owners Elaine and David Kemp previously owned another hotel in Canterbury and have 'stepped up' to the bigger Ersham Lodge, they have a hard act to follow.
The Ersham Lodge is perfectly located for a short walk into Canterbury centre, and is not so big that the guests just become anonomous in the building, it is really like staying around a friends house.
The Ersham Lodge is recommended to everybody who is looking for a quality stay for a very affordable and realistic price.
Good luck to Elaine and David, we will certainly be checking them out before too long.

I visited this B&B with my family for a week long stay in Canterbury when visiting family in the area. My family recommended the hotel based on its closeness to the sights and sounds of the area, and the quality of the rooms on offer at a reasonable price.

This hotel is by no means the Ritz but then at £80 for a family of four including breakfast it isn't trying to be. That said, the beds were very new and allowed us all to have a great nights sleep before the next days exploring, and we also had lots of added extras like a colour tv and the ability to make tea and coffee in our bedroom. The breakfast was very tasty and offered both a cooked english breakfast AND cereals and fruit as well. The coffee at breakfast was devine!

The rooms were clean and tidy and full of 'tutor charm'. Our room was a standard size, enough for four people to be in, but a little 'hectic' when trying to get ready at the same time each morning.

I would definitely stay at this hotel again next time we are in the area and would recommend it to anyone looking for 'nice & homely' accomodation.

My review :-

Just like home - delightful.

Once again we had the pleasure to stay in Canterbury at the Ersham Lodge. This was our ninth time of staying at the hotel and it just gets better every year. Steve and Sheila could not be more helpful, they are such nice people and work so hard for their guests. The hotel is so convenient being just a five minute walk into the city of Canterbury and we were so pleased to see that the Weavers Restaurant was still in business. It was obvious that there have been a number of improvements undertaken in the hotel since we last visited and we can only compliment Steve & Sheila on their efforts. Our bedroom was lovely and very comfortable, the bed guaranteed a good nights sleep which was what we needed after wandering around Canterbury for most of the day. I can recommend anybody to stay here without any problems. It is convenient and offers great value for money when compared to the chain hotels . Oh, and did I mention the breakfast ? Yummie !!
I can't wait until I return.

This hotel may look charming from the outside, but the rooms we had were tiny, tacky, musty-smelling, and the decor was horrid. The showers were electric with very little water pressure...so much so that washing one's hair would be an all day event. The staff were quite friendly, but we'd never recommend this hotel to anyone. The rates were far above what the accommodation warranted.

After seeing the previous reviews on this site i feel i need to voice my opinion on this simple b&b.

On our first night we were caught in terrible traffic and realised we wouldnt reach Canterbury until after 9pm. We called the hotel and they couldnt have been nicer, they left a key out for us and allowed us to check in formally after breakfast the next day.

Our room was a double on the first floor, it had a spacious bedroom and nice bathroom. It had all the essentials, tea, coffee, kettle and hot water at 8am, even though it's a small b&b and was full at the time!

Breakfast was nice, I didnt fancy the full english but they had fruit and loads and loads of types of cereal.

What was nicest was that although we were on a main road (the noise didnt bother us once during our stay) we cant have been more than 10 mins to the city centre.

Surrounding restaurants and bars were great, I can really recommended the pizza express in town.

I see some people have complained the staff were unfriendly, I found them nice and extremely helpful. At the end of the day we booked this b&b because it was great value for money and for the distance to the town centre not because i wanted to make new friends.

I would say if you want a hotel with 24hr manned reception, staff with nothing better to do than bug you while your on holiday and in-house entertainment then pay double the cost for your stay and go elsewhere. If however you want a clean, nice b&b, which is close to the town and offers safe off-road parking stay at The Ersham Lodge!!

P.S. We have already booked another long weekend in September.

Booked this place after reading reviews on here!! Unfortunately it didnt really live up to'most friendly hotel!!'
Turned up at 10am on the day but the hotel was locked! We left our luggage in the car and left the car in the car park...............and put a note through the door to let them know!
Returned at eleven and checked in, the male owner seemed pleasant enough but not very willing to chat ( he'd been on the phone when we came in ) and gave us our key.
The room was fine, typically old fashioned decor, small sink in room and tiny loo and shower(must have been a cupboard once) but perfectly ok.
Went out for the day, came back to change for dinner, went out again, came back about midnight, no one else around.
Breakfast next day, met the lady of the house, again, apart from asking what we wanted to eat, no friendly chat!
Had our breakfast which was lovely, and told the lady we were leaving our key on the table, 'Have you paid your bill?' was her reply, and on being assured that we had she sailed off into the kitchen!
We left!!!!! .............and wont be returning! Ok it was inly £69 for the night but if you're in the b and b business surely a smile doesnt go amiss?????
