“Everything is Extra!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

The room and shower room (no bath) were spotlessly clean as were the bed-linen and towels. However the room was very spartan with only a single plastic chair at the very thin desk as the only seating other than the bed. (No sofa as illustrated in the photographs on this site.) There was nowhere to put a suitcase other than on the bed and only a hanging rail and a single shelf above it to put clothes. Breakfast is Extra. Parking is Extra. Apart from a very thin sliver of soap there are no toiletries. There is a small kettle with 2 tea bags, 2 coffee sachets and 2 decaf coffee sachets together with 2 milk pots and sugar/sweetner.

The location of the hotel is very convenient for walking to the Cathedral and shops, but is a little difficult to find if you are negotiating the Canterbury traffic which can be horrendous around the inner ringroad. It was generally quiet except for some passing late-night revellers. The only member of staff I encountered was very polite and helpful.

This hotel is ideal for a flying visit, but for anything more than just a single night I would suggest looking elsewhere for a room that you want to be more than just somewhere to sleep.

If you book far ahead for one person they'll put you on a single room!

Book a bit later and you'll get a double room.

If you're late to arrive they'll put you in a taxi to another hotel as they seem to overbook.

Profiteering is the name of the game here, and the customer very much comes last.

Tiny, baking hot room. You may get towels left in your room, you may not.

Cheap - We booked months ahead!
Friendly, welcoming staff.
Great location (walking distance to main street and Cathedral). Easy (pay) parking.
Good sized room, clean and quiet.
Recently renovated with new carpets, good bed, nice linen, huge towels it was fabulous value.
Highly recommended.

Very clean and comfortable place to stay. Staff were very friendly and it's located in a great place for shopping or sight seeing. Room was large and it was nice and quiet for a good night sleep. I would stay here again.

Stayed the night having attended friends wedding reception. The rooms were clean, comfortable and most importantly quiet. We would stay again with out hesitation and those friends who choose to pay for breakfast said it was good value. The staff were very helpful also

We stayed here for 2 nights at the end of August and had a pleasant stay. It was good value for money and it is very close to the city centre (just through the underpass).
The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The staff were friendly.
If I was to visit Canterbury again I'd stay here.

Checking in from Brugge around 9.00pm horrified to find room had been double booked after many calls by the member of staff on duty finally transported to whitstable in the middle of nowhere adjacent to a duel carriage way. This booking had been made and paid for weeks in advance and booked to be near the coach station and easy to meet with friends the following day who had arrange to travel to Canterbury.

Staff very helpful and gave complimentary meal and arrange a taxi to transport us, but no apology from travel lodge itself for this mess. Not the fault of the staff at Chaucer who were more the helpful, but obvious they are left to be the fall guys, very poor. Second night back in Canterbury for our second night booking, noisy room with people in the above room could be heard till very late evening. Terrible pillows. Experience spoiled an otherwise perfect holiday.
