Let me comment on just one aspect of The Beaney which struck me. The museum is a reminder of Victorian arrogance, something we would do well to remember. For example, there is a panel of gold leaf decoration collected from a temple in Mandalay when it was destroyed by British troops. There is another panel looted by a British soldier from the Peking summer palace. There are stuffed birds and animals gathered from around the globe with no thought as to whether collection need be constrained for any reason. There is one whole gallery full of items that looked exotic in the 19th century and would easily fit in a traveller's suitcase.
The museum has much more, but I wanted to note this aspect and thank The Beaney for continuing to exhibit its collection so that we get a view not only of the items, but of the mindset of the collectors.
