“Relaxing Pilgrims”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2012

When my family and I stay at Canterbury we stay at two hotels and one of these is The Pilgrims. This hotel is excellent value and is very quirky and quaint. It is in the heart of the city centre and opposite the Marlow Theatre. The food at the Pilgrims where we often have lunch is excellent and I would advise anyone to try there Prawn Salad the size of there Prawns are amazing and all at a good price. Nobody bothers you but they are always on hand if you need help. A good affordable hotel to stay.

Room Tip: First floor.

Room: was at back of hotel, kitchen fans outside window, fat filters evidently full and thus smelly. Bed ok. En-suite excellent. Noise not bad.
Hotel: wouldn't call it a hotel, more of a pub with rooms. But then it isn't much of a pub either. Bar is void of character.
Restaurant: no, not really.
Staff: friendly and helpful - particularly Jason, couldn't have been more helpful.
Summary: for price, good. Stay again? No, better options exist in price range.

I really wanted to give this place more than 3 - but in all honesty I can't.

It all looks lovely - stayed in the Carlisle Room. 4 poster bed and little table with 2 chairs and a modern bathroom. But ... the bed was quite rickety - the mattress was terrible (sort of student digs quality with springs digging in your back). On and off there was quite a strong smell of drains - especially in the morning before the doors were open to vent it. The bath was very short. Sort that a 6" person could only just stretch their legs out and sit up. Not really a massive problem as there was a shower..... but the water pressure was so low it barely dribbled out of the large square rain-head. Also got woken at 6:00am on the Sunday by a bin lorry pulling up smack outside and revving it's engine as it picked up some bins. That's the bad points.

On the plus side. Brilliant location. Reasonable cost for Canterbury, Staff very helpful. Cheap parking in local car-parks. Good breakfast - freshly cooked to order and included in the price. Also decent size glasses for juice rather than those thimbles most places put out. Croissant and fruit/yogurt and cereal all available as well.

It's a shame as so many of the problems could be sorted out for a few hundred quid and that I will give it 3 stars despite the negatives says a lot about how good it is. Didn't ruin our stay - but with a bit more attention it could have really made it. Would stay there again in a couple of years when maybe they'd corrected a few of the downsides. Please go and make up your own mind.

Stayed two nights at the historic Pilgrims Hotel on returning from a cruise to Norway. Hotel is located inside the Canterbury city walls. It is just across from the Marlowe Theatre and is less than a 5 minute walk to the Cathedral. Facilities are very good. The restaurant was a very nice surprise. It must be one of the better places to eat in Canterbury. It gives you a non-chain dining option and offers a wide range of menu options. The fish and chips are the best I have had anywhere in England. Staff are very personable and helpful. The room was cosy and comfortable. Bath room was very modern and well equipped. Our only suggestion would be to replace the mattress on the four poster bed. It was ok but a new mattress would have given the sleep quality a top rating.

Room Tip: The Carlisle Room faces the Marlowe Theatre and has en-suite facilities.

Friendly staff, very central location with an amazing cooked veggie breakfast! Rooms could do with some updating but comfy. Can get a little noisy at night being so central but otherwise a highly recommended stay!

Small, city centre hotel. Very convenient and easy to walk to the sites on foot. Picturesque old building with lots of "olde world" charm (but that also means steep narrow stairs to the slightly cramped room). Functional bar/restaurant (with local ale) and tea making equipment in room. Functional and quaint rather than modern and luxurious. Just what I like.

After a frustrating evening driving round Canterbury, I found this place by accident and I am glad I did, right on the edge of the historic city centre with a wide selection of pubs, parking is opposite in a voucher based car park, this was cheap enough and felt secure, this type of parking is probably to be expected in an ancient city like this.
The room, altough not big was nicely decorated with attractive furniture, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was noce and clean and up to date enough. I chose to eat in the bar/restaurant, the place was inviting, smart and the menu, although not massive was interesting enough, I had the Pork Belly, a risky dish but they had cooked it to perfection, the beer was good as well. THe room rates were very reasonable for the location. The staff were smart and professional although they looked a bit serious, never mind I will come back again.
