Location, location, location.
That must have been as true in 1403 when this lovely old building was erected as it is today. The location, just outside the City's West Gate, has parking round the back and centre of Canterbury just yards from your doorstep. Perfect. Evening meals are not served, but there are plenty of restaurants to suit every pocket within about 100m.
The hotel itself is charming and rambling, but sadly though in need of some TLC. It was full the whole time we stayed there (4 nights in July 2013) so I see no good reason for the neglect and obvious corner-cutting by the management. Carpet, once high quality, is now shabby and threadbare. It is patched with gaffa tape in quite a few places, so this is a real “Trip Advice”. Some of the upholstery, even in the public areas, is shabby and threadbare. Breakfast (standard buffet fare) is eaten on bare wood tables which are ’sticky’ and at this price really could use linen - or at least a proper scrub from time to time.
That said, the overall standard of decoration is fairly good and all the staff I met were friendly and consistently helpful.
We stayed in a four poster room which was a good size and had a double aspect. We were not troubled by traffic noise, in fact our peace was disturbed only by two different car alarms going off in the car park, and I can't blame the hotel management for that. For a so called superior room, the ensuite was tired and dated.
I would stay at The Falstaff again - but only for the location.

Dear Paul H,

Thank you for staying with us and also for taking the time to provide your comments which we greatly appreciate. We are progressing through a rolling programme on the up keep of the property and our maintenance team are currently working on the Tap Building, restoring and re-painting all the windows and brickwork etc. A number of our breakfast tables have also been sanded back and re-varnished where necessary. We will of course move onto the next area(s) once the current project is completed.
I am glad to hear you found the location to be excellent and the team looked after you during your stay. We hope you will notice the on-going improvements upon your return.
