Would have given it a five had cous-cous been ready and available....
Arrived on Easter Saturday at about 11:30am for an early lunch having been in the snow-flurried City of Canterbury since 8:30am. The service was friendly, welcoming and polite. Interestingly shaped put-your-menu together idea, as well as some ready-to-order options. In the absence of a cous-cous base, I opted for a falafel and houmous wrap and a strawberry 'winter warmer' smoothie (although this was a bit of a misnomer as there was nothing warm or wintry about it). Nevertheless, it and the wrap were absolutely top notch fare. The ingredients tasted really fresh; there wasn't too much of something overpowering other flavours. The smoothie was really great with a very mild tartness cutting through the sweetness so as not to make it feel sickly. It went down a treat.
The stairs at Canteen are steep and narrow and and full of charm with modern, basic quasi-kitsch furniture - plastic bucket seats and brightly coloured pouffes. Would appeal to pretentious, trying-to-be-cool, middling-class couples (like us) and students.
A toasted sandwich with coffee and a wrap with a smoothie was 50p shy of £20, so not cheap for a small lunch, but by no means expensive either given the interesting and tasty food.
All in all, a real treat and would definitely eat there again. Cous-cous at the ready, it might even get a might five next time.
