If you visit in Winter, enquire about the candlelit tour. It is excellent.
The cathedral is very atmospheric when lit by nothing but candles....and the glow from a few street lights; it helps if you can suspend belief and pretend the only outside light is the moon!
We expected the role play stuff to be a bit naff, but it really worked and I confess this surprised me. The atmosphere created by the candlelight may have a lot to do with it....the glass of wine (included in the ticket price) too, perhaps.
As might be expected, some of the 'brothers' and pilgrims were more convincing than others. On the evening of our tour the 'brother' who described the tomb of St Alban was superb, he deserved an Olivier award!
It is only when you've completed the tour that it dawns on you that a huge amount of information has been conveyed. For a group of volunteers to lay on a tour such as this and for it to tick-off three key 'E's (enlightening, entertaining and enjoyable) is hugely impressive.
The tour has potential to become a St Albans highlight, although it's success will inevitably be limited by the fact that it can only really be conducted in the winter months.
