I thought we had droped on a total gem of place to stay in lovely St Albans. A cosy friendly pub with B&B at a good price close to the city centre. I knew we only had a twin room but I thought it as a en suite room.
On arrival we were told that we were in room 1 and the bathroom as right next door. Not quite what we expected but thought no more about it really. No one said it was a shared facility so what was the issue? How wrong could we be,? It seemed almost all other people in the B&B, and indeed pub, used this bathroom! Sharing bathrooms with strangers isn’t something most people relish especially when they shower and leave ‘curly hair ‘ in the bath!!!!
The bedroom itself was really nice, warm and cosy with lots of tea and coffee items, clean and really quaint.
The breakfast on the Saturday was lovely served by a really lovely lady while we sat in front of a warm fire. We asked for a slightly later breakfast on the Sunday, 09:00 rather than 08:30, and were told that would be fine,
Come the Sunday morning we arrived down stairs at 09:05 to find everywhere locked up. The cleaner appeared who offered to knock the breakfast guy up! At 09:15 he finally arrived apologising for having had a late night and he was clearly hung over. Really his punishment was having to cook breakfasts in this state!. We had to ask for fruit juice and there was no milk or sugar on the tables – we shared our milk with the next table but they seemed to know the hung over guy and just accepted this is how it was.
When the breakfast did finally arrive at 09:45 it was good so at least that was a saving grace.
It is hard for hoteliers at the moment so you’d think they would want to offer a really good service to all of their guests . It is such a shame this great pub doesn’t understand the value of the B&B guest. We won’t be returning to stay but we would visit for a drink as the pub really is great.
