Back in 2010 my partner & I stayed and this hotel and had a lovely time, so as part of a coach party we decided to revisit last week. Oh my word, how it has changed !! the first thing we do whenever we arrive is make a good old cup of tea, the hospitality tray contained 1 tea bag, 1 sachet of coffee and 2 tiny pots of milk, we always take our own tea bags and biscuits so that didn't bother us too much, but oh my goodness, the kettle was filthy inside. No worries I thought, I'll phone reception, guess what, the phone didn't work and we were on the 3rd floor (I had requested a LOW floor room when booking). By the way I understand when later researching that this floor is reckoned to be haunted, I'm not surprised, I feel like coming back to haunt them after our experience at this hotel. Anyway after a struggle we contacted a fellow on reception who first of all said he couldn't change the kettle as they didn't have any more, so I asked him to get it cleaned properly, he eventually returned with another kettle. We had a twin room and both bedspreads were ripped, there was thick dust you could write your name on in various places, on the floor was a rug which was in an awkward place so I tripped, when removing the rug I found it was covering a big hole in the carpet, we reported all this and some of it was dealt with the next day and the young guy on reception agreed with me that it was unacceptable, I must say he was helpful but didn't appear to have a lot of authority. We went down for our meal which was the D I Y system out of what I call troughs, it was set out with English cuisine in one area and Indian in the other, the English section was pathetic with hardly any choice whilst the Indian section was brimming with choice, bearing in mind we were with a group of "recycled teenagers" everyone was scrambling around the English section, after I complained to the restaurant manager, we did see a bit of fish on the last night, but otherwise all we had on offer was roast, there was little choice of starters or puddings. To be fair, the restaurant staff consisting of mainly young fellows were pleasant enough but were mainly employed for table clearing. There was one miserable looking older lady on breakfast duty, I think she might have been married to Victor Meldrew !! she was slamming around the covers on the food troughs, saying we weren't putting them back properly so the food was getting cold. All in all not a very enjoyable time, where is Alex Polizzi or Gordon Ramsey, I believe that years ago this hotel was part of the Forte group which is Alex's family, in fact there was an old rubbish bin in our room the the Forte label still on it, goodness knows how long that had been there !! I don't think we will return for a third visit !!!!
