Wanted a night in Winchester and to try another Hotel du Vin - so pleased to be able to combine them! Also happy to find that they do take single night bookings at the weekend - as many hotels now seem to have a 'two night minimum'

Had the Courvoisier room - sold as a 'bit special' - and it was. Great size - both room and bed - massive windows which opened. Personally not too sure about the roll top bath at the end of the bed - but it made a change! Although the room is directly above the restaurant - there were no problems with noise- or any sort of disturbance. The lighting in the room was very subtle - and difficult to read by -which would be annoying if staying for a longer period.

Service in the hotel is excellent - everyone knows what they are doing and does it very well. We ate in the restaurant and the food was first class. Personally I found the ambiance a bit lacking - too 'conveyor belty' but I think I am being a bit picky.

Winchester was ace - loads to do and finding the Christmas market and ice rink at the cathedral was the icing on the cake. The one way system is very unforgiving - so dump your car on arrival and walk !

“A little disappointing”

We stayed at this hotel with the previous reviewer. We were similarly disappointed with the condition of the air conditioning in the room and the fact that the windows barely opened six inches. This made the room very stuffy and we found it hard to sleep.
Our friends paid extra for a 'luxury room' (Brown Brothers) although there was very little difference between their room and our standard room (Villa Maria). In fact the only difference we would find was that their bathroom was marginally bigger than ours.
However, our room did have a wonderful view of the Cathedral and was beautifully furnished. The bathroom was well equipped with lovely fluffy towels, robes and lots of toiletries (which you are encouraged to take away!)
We decided not to have breakfast as this would have been an additional £9-13. However, make sure you check your bill when you leave as they will try to charge you for breakfast even if you haven't had it! Avoid the mini-bar and snacks - a Mars bar will cost you £1.90! We were also told that the newspaper would be complementary but was charged £2 for it upon departure.
The location of the hotel is ideal for exploring the city of Winchester but is opposite a noisy student pub.

“Overpriced”

We stayed at this hotel for one night. It was perfectly situated in the centre of Winchester, with beautiful gardens to the rear. We paid extra for a luxury room. However, we were very disappointed. The room was very small and the electric and air conditioning didn't work properly. This caused problems as the room was far too warm and the windows only opened a crack. Our room was located at the back of the hotel, overlooking the garden. This was very pleasant. However, it meant that we were directly above those visitors who were smoking in the garden until the early hours of the morning. We were also next to the staircase, so we could hear footsteps late into the night. There was no turn-down service, which we would expect in a hotel such as this and we were charged for a newspaper that was supposed to be complimentary. I would suggest that the hotel charges about £50 a night less for their rooms!

“Good but patchy”

Stayed here last week for two nights while on business. I had a lovely room with a real fireplace and the quirks of an old house converted into a hotel.

Food wonderful - as always at HdV and staff really attentive

THe reason for saying the Hotel was patchy was that colleagues of mine were not so luck in their choice of rooms - one had a room which was really tiny and another had a room that suffered from a lot of noise from other rooms / bathrooms. We were all charged the same price.

We stayed at the Hotel du Vin as a surprise for my birthday. We were in the main house (very grand) in Courvoisier which overlooks the walled garden. It was very light, bright and airy with a roll top bath at the end of the bed. A huge bed, all the bits and pieces you might want (including an embarassing amount of toiletries which you are encouraged to take away with you), a seperate loo and a separate shower which was wonderful too!
We had dinner in the bistro and whilst they were a bit late serving us the meal was faultless and the wine list extensive.

All in all a great hotel, the staff were friendly, particuarily at breakfast the next day, all went to plan and we couldn't be happier. Great location and parking too! I hope to stay in a few more HdV's in the future.
Highly recommended.
