“In the heart of the olde capital”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

We visited Winchester for the first time and were amazed to learn it was the original capital city of England. Everyone should visit this city at least once; it's dripping in antiquity and history. The Wykeham Arms is situated adjacent to the city wall and is the ideal place to visit the city by foot. We just left our car in their car park and forgot about it.the reception was extremely friendly and delivered with a smile. We did a deal on their suite which is situated just opposite the inn on the other side of a very small road. Slightly unusual route to the suite via another business bur we found a well appointed living area with facilities on the ground floor and small bedroom on a mezzanine. The deal we struck made it very good value for money; the location may make their standard tariff palatable. We didn't eat their as there is a plethora of excellent restaurants in Winchester but we did have a drink in the bar which was a great experience. Decor is interesting with lots of school desks and church memorabilia. We'd stay there again for sure.

Room Tip: Suite provides well appointed quietness and isolation.

Stayed for one night taking advantage of the Sunday special (twin room with breakfast and £20 towards dinner, for £105 for two)

The Kelsey room (bedrooms are in a seperate building opposite the pub) was clean, comfortable and quiet. Excellent breakfast and service. The evening food was contemporary and imaginative and very good.

Lots of interesting things to look at throughout the pub, including cathedral desks. Good selection of beers and wines. If you want an excellent pub near the cathedral this civilised place will surpass your expectations.

My son and I stay at this charming establishment last night, in prep for a meeting with one of the housemasters at Winchester College this morning. The room (called Post Box) was spacious, very well upholstered and comfortable. Terrific water pressure in the shower / bath, and high-end toiletries. Breakfast was excellent and included in the price, which was incredibly reasonable for the standard and quality we experienced. Most of all, each and every member of staff we came across was charming, smily and polite. They made for a first class stay. I'm sure we will be back very soon. Thank you.

Room Tip: We stayed in Post Box, a luxury double.

Everyone who visits Winchester I think should pop into the Wykeham Arms for at least a drink and see what it's all about! It's a fabulous place. We only stopped for a drink yesterday but have eaten there in the past, which was superb. The decor is fascinating and eclectic ........loved all the tankards hanging around the quirky rooms, I asked the barman how many they were.........apparently 1700 plus! It's a great place, we will visit again soon I hope! Our friends who were visiting us from Cheshire couldn't believe how lucky we are to have such an mix of fabulous watering holes to frequent so close to home!

My husband and I stayed at the Wykeham Arms for 2 nights at the end of a 2 week holiday visiting Wales and England. The location is central and the atmosphere special.

The hotel - great attention to detail
We stayed in the suite. The bed was comfortable and the sheets above normal hotel standard. The bathroom was off a dressing room and well appointed. The bathroom amenities are high quality and we appreciated the bathrobes. The bathtub is huge and the shower strong. The only issue was the hot water. Bearing in mind the age of building and the fact that the hotel was fully booked when we stayed, there was no hot water both mornings. There was hot water in the evenings because I did take a bath. Another small thing was the towel warmer did not work. We did report it to the staff and it was confirmed it was fixed, but it did not work at all during our stay.

The fresh milk in the fridge for coffee and tea is a nice touch. If you are not in the mood for coffee we also found a couple of beers in the fridge. Breakfast is included and offers a nice choice of cold and hot options.

Parking is included.

The pub-warm and inviting
Great beer and wine selection, attentive friendly staff and great atmosphere! The fireplace was a nice welcome after a day out in the rain. The walls are full of history and curiosities. We had 2 meals and the food was good, but on the expensive side. Again, lots of choice and interesting modern interpretations of classic pub food. Be sure to try the cheese and pickle. I don't usually go for dessert, but don't skip it at the Wykeham Arms. The chocolate blueberry souffle was amazing! It is a busy place so it is best to make reservations.

Staying at the Wykeham Arms was one of the highlights of our trip to Winchester.

Room Tip: If you would like a quiet stay, ask for a room across from the pub.

Stayed in the Wykeham Arms, Winchester last month. It was ok but nothing special. No hot water on Saturday morning till after 9! Breakfast was fine and the staff were polite but there was very little atmosphere. Good location though.
