“Great food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2013

I really enjoyed this place. The pub is in the centre of old Winchester and is steeped in English tradition. The food is really good and I would certainly eat here again. The rooms are small but well appointed. If you are looking for basic, bland pub grub this is not the place for you. However, if you are looking for great dining in a fantastic location - try this.

We visited for lunch on recommendation of a local, great pub, plenty of atmosphere, good selection of beer and wine, but the food portions were very small and not inexpensive.

The Calves liver at £14.50, although tasted good, was like a starter portion in many pubs, my wife had the renown Wyk pie, which was a tasteless small portion of minced beef, flavoured with tomato, covered with mashed potatoes and topped with cheese, poorly seasoned and very bland, it came with a miniature saucepan (about desert spoonful) of microwaved frozen peas, nothing else.
We left very disappointed and I was still hungry, I mentioned our discontent to the staff and was told they would pass on our comments to the kitchen.

I had to ask for the table to be cleared, then ask again for it to be wiped clean.

Serving up food like this to tourists will not encourage a recommendation or return.
£40 for lunch is fine if we get good value. WE WILL NOT RETURN.

Decided to meet up here with a couple of friends. A half way point. None of us had eaten here before but were all very excited as heard good things.
It was a Sunday. I was greeted by a lady, not overly helpful just gestured as to where the bar was and that was that. We met our friends and had a drink at the bar before asking someone else to take us to our table.
The chap who showed us over really looked uninterested and like the whole world was about to end! Anyway, we order 3 roast lunches and 1 fish pie. Our roasts looked and tasted amazing. The fish pie looked more like a starter size. It was for a bloke so us 2 girls had to give him some of our food. Very disappointing for the price.
Puds were good.
All in all the food was very tasty. Portion size really needs to be looked at. And out of the 4 people the served us only 1 of them smiled. The staff really do make a place and based on staff alone we wont be returning.
Shame.

As first time guests we were surprised to be staying across the road from the pub but it was a nice room, comfy bed, good bathroom and had good facilities and looked out onto a quiet courtyard, thats were the peace ended, the guests above us were extremely noisy, I have never known anyone walk about a hotel room so much, as the building is so old there is no sound proofing and it sounded like a couple of elephants above us, this wouldn't have mattered if they hadn't kept this up till the early hours of the morning when they decided to take showers, the water pipes ran down the side of our room, so be aware of this.
The main problem was the car park, it is rather small and difficult to get into and gets very crowded, the hotel staff do have keys to the cars blocking you in but if you haven't stayed there before you wouldn't know this and probably wouldn't dream of double parking. Overall the hotel is nice and staff very helpful.

Given its location in historic Winchester, the Wykeham Arms should have a lot to boast about. But my recent experience of a weekday lunch was a little disappointing. To be fair the food was nicely presented, but was in no way was spectacularly special or value for money. The scallops starter was small in quantity and the fried haddock and chips as a main course fell short of a poor Fish'n Chip shop. I have tasted better in the latter! The sweet course was not readily invited in spite of the menu being asked for twenty minutes earlier. Sadly, all rather disappointing considering the excellent reputation of this establishment. And it wasn't a busy period. In fact tables were readily available. However, it might have been my unfortunate experience...but one can only speak/report as one finds.

As a guest at a celebratory lunch on Sunday, I was served with one of the worst meal I've encountered. It was not cheap but the portions were very small and sadly not even cooked properly . Even the sweet was inedible.

Had the same amount of effort been put into the cooking of the meal as was involved in the pretenious presentation it might have been acceptable.
Normally this would have been returned to the kitchen but I did not want to embarrass my host.
