“Christmas - 2013”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2014

Having spent Christmas in many 5* and 4* hotels in the south, Lainston House is without doubt the best. The attention to detail was fantastic, and the hotel staff were exceptional. The whole family is already looking forward to next Christmas.

We stayed for a Saturday night in January. The weather was dismal, but as soon as we arrived at the hotel our spirits lifted. A genuinely warm welcome from the receptionist and a roaring log fire greeted us. We stayed in Oak, which is a very large room with a huge bathroom, complete with whirlpool bath and large free-standing rain shower. The bed was comfy, and there was absolutely no noise at night which make for a perfect sleep.

The food was lovely; the venison for dinner was perfectly cooked, and there was a great range of delicious fruits and pastries at breakfast, along with a very filling cooked breakfast choice.

The grounds are impressive, and we had a bit of a wander despite the wind and rain to have a look at the owls.

All of the staff were fantastic, and I can't find even the smallest fault with any aspect of our stay. I can't wait to go back.

We stayed overnight here recently with friends for a January 'treat'. The house is in a wonderful setting, with grounds and garden to explore and good walking in the surrounding area. The highlight of our stay was the food : we indulged in the afternoon cream tea, plus dinner (which was a delight) and breakfast - with some of the best breakfast choices I have seen. Service was impeccable throughout and there are culinary surprises at every turn e.g. the range of different gins available for your G&T. It seems churlish to complain after saying all this but we were not entirely happy with our room. The two rooms were booked together but whilst our friends were accommodated in the main house (and had a magnificent room) we were in an annex, in a rather tired looking smaller room. We expected to be together. I did ask about this at the desk but was told that both rooms were, in fact, 'deluxe' and that we had been upgraded from 'traditional'. Moreover, there were no rooms left available in the main house. I think in many ways, although this is a 'country house hotel', it is quite corporate and I have stayed in many others where it is much more personal. But the food was superb and we had a convivial time, which was the main objective.

Room Tip: ask for one in the main house as they are much grander

O.k. It was a holiday!!Spendthrifts allowed!!Fortunately,I had borrowed a friends car for a week,as we spend most of our life in France. It was an Aston Martin, and I can truly say it did not feel embarassed at Lainston House! The drive in sets the tone.Long, and delicious! At the moment of arrival,a gentleman appeared, handled our luggage, and parked our car.Reception was friendly, not obseqious, and with the minimum of fuss we were conducted to our room.Room is an understatement!!Enormous room, enormous bed, vast bathroom, and a seperate shower, again huge, with the possibility of being hit by water from almost every direction!Thewife opted for a bubble bath. She looked lonely in the bath.Enough said!Thence to dinner.Beautifully cooked and presented.Only criticism,it smacked of Cuisine Nouvelle! Not enough calories if you are a gourmand, rather than a Gourmet.Tant Pis!,It was excellent.Yes,the cost was highish, but you did get value.Asusual, wine was exorbitant, but offered an excellent selection.I will look forward to my next visit.Final selfish comment.InWinter, there is no apparent place for a smoker to go,undercover,to get his fix.Neuf points, mes Amis!

Room Tip: Ground floor,if partially disabled.Mayfly, was our room.Fabulous!

Having stayed at all four of the hotels in the Exclusive Hotels Group, I’d say the best compliment we can pay Lainston House is that in our opinion, this was the best of the four, and they are all pretty good.
The grounds and the original main building are impressive, but like so many hotels, the majority of the rooms appear to be in extensions added at a later date, although this has been done very sympathetically. The bar and lounge were both comfortable
We stayed for two nights in the “Olive” junior suite, which was a beautiful room, with a triple aspect. It was spotlessly clean, very well equipped, and had a huge bathroom with a free standing bath, plus a shower area with two rain bath showers. It’s the room they display in the brochure and on the website, so it must be good! The room was serviced both in the morning and as part of the turndown service in the evening, where water and towels were replenished if required.
The staff were friendly and attentive to the correct degree, and were always smiling, which is good to see. There were also some nice touches, such as Wellington Boots available if you fancy a walk around the grounds.
We dined both nights in the Avenue restaurant. On the first evening we tried the tasting menu , which is a great way of sampling a variety of what is on offer, and, if it is for a special occasion, I would recommend having the accompanying wines, as they were really well matched to the courses. It does make it a little pricey, but it is worth it for the experience. On the second evening we chose the standard menu options, and again the food was very good.
Breakfast was good without being fantastic, and the only minor issue was on the Sunday morning, when the restaurant was very busy, and our cooked breakfast was served lukewarm, although still edible. It’s only a small thing, and I’m sure they would have changed it if we had complained.
Overall, I would definitely recommend Lainston House.

My wife and I have stayed at the Lainston House Hotel outside of Winchester multiple times in the past and have always had enjoyable stays. This year we decided to indulge in their multi-night Christmas package of room, meals and activities. We arrived on the day before Christmas to find that power had been out since midnight due to a severe storm the day before. One small suggestion we have is that they should have notified the arriving guests in advance of the outage. But they made the best of the situation and were able to provide a perfectly serviceable afternnon tea with hot water and sandwiches, etc. Power came on before dinner and the chef did a masterful job of preparation considering he had no electricity for most of the day. The meals, including traditional Christmas day luncheon, breakfast every day and a huge evening buffet were delicious and expertly served. The pastry chefs provided a savory end to every meal. Our room, a traditional suite, was large and very comfortable. It took a while for the heat to come back after power was restored but the heated bathroom floor made up for that. The scheduled events added to our fun. For us, the highlight was the raptor demonstration. Being up close and personal with these birds showed why they were the preserve of royalty. Billy Taylor was a most entertaining host. We also found the walk through the extensive grounds with Richard, a professional guide, educational and enjoyable. And the midnight service at Winchester Cathedral was memorable. I have reserved my greatest praise for the staff who went out of their way to make sure our every need was seen to. From the desk staff, through maintenance, housekeeping, waiters, bartenders and Father Christmas himself we had the feeling that they sincerely wanted us to enjoy ourselves. Valerie, in particular, who always seemed to be there when needed, could not have made us feel more welcome.
