We have been to the River Inn many times, and have usually enjoyed our meal. The carvery has probably been the best in the area - but things seem to be going downhill!
Perhaps it was a mistake to go between Christmas and the New Year, and perhaps we should have been forewarned by the lads in front of us when we arrived who had been waiting 45 minutes for a table and had, quite simply, been forgotten. We were shown straight to a table, but then waited over half an hour before we eventually had to ask if anyone was serving our table. When a stressed waitress eventually came to take our order we ordered drinks and went to queue for the carvery - which was deserted! The server eventually appeared, looking as unhappy at being working as all the other staff - but despite the wait, there was still no sign of our drinks when we got back to the table.
When we had finished our food - which was good, as usual - we waited in vain, again, for anyone to come and clear our table (or the neighbouring ones!) but eventually caught the eye of the hassled duty manager. We really wanted dessert, but decided we couldn't wait. We still had to wait for coffee, as they had to make it fresh - and we began to wonder if they had forgotten us yet again!
All in all, a disappointing experience not helped by the sullen, unhelpful staff. We won't be back in a hurry.
