“excellent food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

We recently visited on two nights running due to catching up with our son working on the Panto.

Both occasions the food was very good, hot, tasty and plentiful. So much so that we returned without hesitation on the second night. Pre theatre dinner one, two or three courses up to £20 was excellent value, the staff were also very pleasant.

Worth a visit.

“Would have been excellent if not let down by coffee”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012

The Vestry restaurant/bar is a very striking and sympathetically converted church. We ate very early and took advantage of the pre theatre menu, although not going to the theatre. It was very good value, 1, 2 or 3 courses for just under £20.

The staff were all excellent. All the dishes we had were very tasty, very nicely presented, came on piping hot plates and all 4 of us enjoyed everything we ate.

Starter and desert portions were a sensible size we thought, it not too big but main courses were very generous. We came away feeling nicely full but not overstuffed!

Our only criticism was the coffee, which was only tepid and in our opinion tasted very poor quality.

Saying that we would all definitely go back!

“Improved again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012

Yet another visit to the Vestry... this time the food was excellent again and the waiter used some intelligence in making up the bill - was very much appreciated!!

Both the soup and smoked haddock starters were excellent - served nice and hot!!

Main course: burger massive - a double burger with lots of 'green', chips nice and chunky and crispy... bit let down by the coleslaw - I'm sure if they made their own it would be tasty, the stuff served was just 'bland'. Lamb hock, tasty but just OK rather than excellent...

Puds: B&B pud nice, but the rhubarb and custard pud was fabulous (and not quite what you might expect!!)

Now back on the 'recommended' list - especially if you're visiting the theatre

“Poor service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

Booked a Christmas party and the customer service had been great when I needed to change my booking but unfortunately we were let down on the actual night. We had to wait quite a while for our veg to arrive with our meals meaning they got cold whilst we were waiting. Also desserts did not arrive at the same time so half the table had already finished eating. Then no one came to offer us the mince pies and coffee at the end of the night. Not the kind of service I was expecting considering other reviews on here. I was disappointed!!

“Let us in we want to eat!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

A mate had eaten here before so we decided to have a bite pre-footie on a Saturday lunch. We were booked in at midday but as they opened at 11 a.m. we decided to grab the newspapers and have a drink and a read first. We arrived at 11.10 to find it was still closed. Banging on the big old door got no response and we couldn`t find the entrance to the kitchen for a surprise attack. When we did phone at 11.20 we were told they were going to open up immediately. Relief the door was opened and from then on great service and attitude. Cool lager and decent red wine accompanying very reasonable food. Bar area downstairs with dining if required and great space upstairs in this converted church right opposite the theatre. Service is swift due to the hurried theatre goers and we will return.
