“ideal for the purpose”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

stayed here before a cruise and it was ideal for the purpose. It was as described with large rooms and comfortable beds. Food in the evening was basic ( reception did offer directions to nearby eating places ) breakfast was very good except as you would expect everybody wanted to eat at the same time. We took advantage of the parking available which was close by and then 20 mins from the port. On our return we were in our car well on our way home 45 mins after disembarkation ( we carried our own cases off early )

Never again
We were visiting Southampton to view a yacht and this appeared very convenient for where we needed to be, which it was. Check in is at 2.00pm, as on the booking confirmation, but what has always been my experience, and that is a lot of experience, that is for possession of the room allowing enough time for the rooms to be made ready. We were early by 30 minutes so we asked if we may just check in and do the paperwork, but keep our luggage with us and return later that evening. Normal practice in all hotels we have stayed in. We were flatly refused, the receptionist stating that she did not know what rooms were going to be available. Really!! A hotel that does not know how many rooms it has available and when guests are checking out! That was a 1st for us. Anyway, we left for our appointment and returned around 6.00ish only to be met with a huge queue and one receptionist doing the checking in. The other receptionist busied herself doing paperwork. It took over 15 minutes to check in. Arriving at the room it appeared on the surface OK, I went to turn on the television to catch up with the news. Where's the remote? No remote! Off to reception to request one which was delivered 10 minutes later. My wife then went to use the bathroom and found the toilet in a disgusting state. Off to reception again who then sent a cleaner to remedy the matter. This was meant to be a freshly cleaned room remember. We then went out to see what restaurants were available returning much later only to find now the key card did not work. Back to reception again for a new card. Then we settled into the room. The curtains did not fit the window and were an odd length. The bathroom had mould around the bottom of the shower tray (see photographs) and the heating for the room was a wall mounted heater that you had to get on your hands and knees to fumble underneath for the mains electric switch. Incredible! From my experience of HIE's in the past I knew that WiFi, our modern day lifeline, was available in reception free of charge for 30 mins everyday. In all other HIE's they have the code printed out on a leaflet and a pile of those is on the reception desk so you can simply help yourself. I asked at reception for the code and it was as if i had asked for her personal house keys. A piece of paper was finally produced with the code on it and as I entered the code into my iPad the receptionist triumphantly announced that the code would not work with 'one of those things' only a 'real computer'. I then proceeded to log on to her disgust and dismay.
Breakfast the following morning: We ambled out to breakfast at around 9.00 am (ish) working on the assumption that the business people would have eaten and left and the room would be quiet. Oh how wrong we were. The scene resembled an infants school cafeteria with screaming children everywhere and parents that seemed oblivious to the mayhem their children were causing tipping plates and bowls over on the tables, running up and down between the tables and generally being children. The average age was around 4 years old. The food and plates were being consumed so fast that the staff could not or would not keep up with demand. Tables were left dirty and you had to wait while the food was topped up and the plates and cutlery as well. We endured two nights and two mornings of this. It transpired after making some enquiries to parents with children that the local theme park runs a theme called 'Peppa Pig' and HIE offer a package to parents including entrance and accommodation to the park. We were not informed of this when we booked and no warning was given at check in or on the website of the level of young children that could be experienced in this hotel. Wrongly we assumed a business hotel would be used in the main by business people. Oh how wrong we were. I wrote to HIE about all the incidents and received a standard reply stating thank you for letting us know, blah, blah, We will let the hotel know about your concerns, but what was clear they would do nothing about it. So much for Holiday Inn standards these days.
My advice is find another hotel. Never again will we stay in this hotel, but if you like unclean rooms, bad indifferent service, non existent management and mayhem served with breakfast (or at least an excuse for breakfast) then please, be our guest and we hope you enjoy it.

Its not the sort of place I like to be honest, its a prefab clean typical budget hotel and as such I suppose does a job. Room ok, bathroom ok, bar awful reception ok, internet way overpriced all in all I'll avoid the Holiday Inn Expresses in future, only stayed at one before in Inverness and that had better amenities by being close to a decent pub, this ones isolated close to what appears to be a council estate.

Room Tip: Go to another hotel

We have stayed at this Hotel twice before and used it for a one night stopover before a cruise from Southampton. This time we were dissapointed with the Hotel. The room we were allocated had a very strong smell of cigarette smoke even though it was supposed to be a non smoking room. The bed setee was very uncomfortable and the springs were coming through the matress. I would not use this Hotel again as there are alot better ones closer to the Port.

Stayed on a Saturday night and expected a little noise. The walls are like paper and you can hear conversations in the next room. Dont go on the ground floor unless you have to as the noise above is also bad. Didn't get a good nights sleep at all.
Facilities in the room are OK with kettle and coffee, hairdryer and shower although the soap dispensers were all empty.
Breakfast the next morning was OK but dont get there half an hour before it is due to close (10:30am) as if they don't have the food out..tough! And when you ask the waitress ges off and doesn't come back!!

Room Tip: Do not choose 127 as by the carpark and noise from all angles means you have no chance of a good nig...
