“Get a real feel of English history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2014

Westgate is an opening in a fairly large section of the Old City Walls of Southampton. It is the western entrance to the old city. It is in excellent condition and gives you a real feel for what the old city looked like in medieval times. Definitely worth seeing if you like historic sites - and it's free!

“Wrong picture and location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2014 via mobile

First frustrating moment ever with tripadvisor.
First of all: the picture belongs to the Mayflower Memorial
Second: the real location of the Westgate is south-east from what it is marked here, and more than 8 blocks from there!
It's a must see landmark, but if you go shopping and for dinner you will never miss it, you will definitely walk through it.

“Enjoyable walk along old city walls”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

Enjoyed our walk along the old city walls of Southampton. The pleasant walk from the old town quay gave us a sense of the historic nature of Southampton's past as we read the information boards along the way. As Americans we enjoyed seeing the Mayflower memorial.

“A medieval gate in Southampton`s Old Walls.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013

The Westgate is part of Southampton`s old city walls-much of which is surprisingly well preserved given that so much of the city was blitzed to oblivion in WW2.It is in the area close to Town Quay where much of the medieval city can still be seen as well as a magnificent Tudor mansion house recently restored.

“history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

Was surprised that Southampton had such a lot of historic buildings, From the Westgate to a lot of the walls that surrounded the city many years ago. It is nice that you can go up on top of the walls where you get a good view and NO charge. There is information boards on the walls so that you can read all about where you are and what it was built for all that time ago. Worth a look if you are in the town and a break from shopping.
