“Fantastic day out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

We went with friends on the Shieldhall for an afternnon in Cowes week.Once an engine problem had been seen to-that in itself was interesting as all the volunteers were rushing around trying to sort it-we set off and had a very jolly time in the Solent for a few hours. Not overcrowded on board so nice. Basic facilities but that is half the fun.The gentlemen should let their good wives back to do the catering as the food was truly dreadful!!However once again it was part of the joy of it.A great day out.

“Southampton's Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

Had a lovely time. Never knew the Shieldhall even existed and I have lived in Southampton for many years. This is a proper working cargo ship that has been kept alive by a great team of volunteers. Will definitely visit again!

“Great all round day”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

We travelled on ss Shieldhall on our 1st wedding anniversary (we are mid 40's) plus grandparents (late 80s) we travelled from Southampton to the needles and return. Weather was fairly warm but would recommend taking a blanket if you want to sit out all day. This was an all day event and we got chatting to a few people which made the day enjoyable. We had a CaM pie (chicken and ham) which was really good. No this is not a top notch restaurant its a bit take it as you find it but thoroughly enjoyable, great staff (all volunteers) We had oddles of hot drinks. Once the sun lost its heat we ventured indoors watching the views from the comfort seating area. We were able to go down to the boiler room, which was very interesting and go up to the top deck to get a feel of how to drive the boat. Good memories and great value.

“An Unbeatable day out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

Having meant to go on the Sheildhall for years I finally got around it it when in Southampton to visit friends. It was a cruise to see the Class J racing yachts, and I don't think there could have been a better place to see the racing from, I'm not a great follower of sailing but it was fantastic. Finding the Sheildhall is easy, follow the signs to the docks (dock gate 4 specifially) which are everywhere, all the way from the motorway, it's hard to miss, then park up (for a small charge) about 50 yards from the ship. Once onboard and underway there is plenty of space, with a limit of around 200 people there's room for all, plenty of deck space or, if the weather's a bit damp, undercover. The two best things about the Shieldhall is that, once underway passengers are free to go pretty much where they like; the bridge, engine room, boiler room, bar/restuarant etc, the other one being that the whole ship is run by volunteers, who are ALL (from the captain to the guys on deck) are more than happy to chat and tell you about the ship. The food onboard is both reasonable and excellent quality, apparantly the pie I had was made onboard that morning. When I went the weather wasn't great but don't let that put you off, due to her size she's very stable, I don't think she swayed at all on the whole cruise.

P.S. I was so impressed I went on a further cruise during Cowes week, have joined the society and hope to join in as a volunteer.

“SS Shieldhall”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2012

This is a genuine step back in time. A former Clyde steamer, the Shieldhall used to take sewage out to sea. It was then used to give trips to injured soldiers and then to tourists. It since fell into disrepair, before being rescued and restored to its former glory by an amazing group of passionate volunteers. Where Shieldhall differs from similar vessels is that you can not only take a trip around the Solent on it, but you can also have a look around the bridge and engine room. It's amazing to wander about amongst the pistons as they work away. The friendly team of engineers and sailors will happy answer questions and point out items of interest. Don't miss this hidden gem.
