“Amazing service, even better food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

Proper home-cooked indian food, and to my suprise, pure vegetarian. The manager/owner greeted us on arrival and took care of the orders of pre-starters and drinks, before he returned both for the starters and the main. We didn't have one look at the menu the entire evening, the mangager asked us "do you like this, do you like that" and matched the food to our preferences, simply brilliant when it works out the way it did. Would highly recommend a visit, passionate, service minded owner, and high quality tasty food for a fair price.

“our meal at Indian Melody”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2013

This is a great restaurant! We are vegetarian and loved the huge choice of veggie food on this menu. Besides the food being great...the atmosphere is welcoming. For anyone who enjoys 'home cooked' indian food to visit this lovely place.

“Very disappointed second visit - AVOID”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2013

Took mother in law on Mothers day. As it was mid avo the restaurant had only a few small groups of customers. We had a buggy and were made to feel like we were not welcome - lots of umming and ahhing later we were seated and were given a highchair for our little one. The chair was absolutely filthy! we did not use it. It took them 5 minutes to bring us menus.

We were keen on the lunch buffet which was served until 3pm, but upon asking to go ahead with it we were told by the owner that the food on the buffet was running low so we decided to go for Masala Dosas. 20 minutes later we were told that the dosa filling had run out and whether we wanted to go for paneer masala dosa, which we did.

About an hour later we had one COLD paneer dosa arrive, and waited a further 10 minutes for the rest of our food before then going to ask what was going on. The owner initially took action and requested a fresh hot dosa be made and chased the rest of the order. I went on to ask why it was taking so long as there were only 3 small groups of customers which had been served quite some time ago so I could not understand why a simple dosa was taking so long! The owner got all defensive and said that they had been busy with the backlog and that we would have to wait our turn! He in no way apologised for the delay in the food.

Our dosas suprisingly then arrived within 5 minutes! however we were expected to share the bowls of Sambar and Chutney! I do not know how they expect such a small bowl of sambar and chutney to go three ways!

The food was average, the paneer masala dosa had scarce shavings of paneer so may as well not have any paneer in the dish at all.

The owner seems friendly at first but very defensive and not very courteous at all. The staff were not very friendly and a simple request like tap water seemed to put them out.

Ruined our occasion will NOT be going back

“Amazing food, quirky owner!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013

This restaurant is incredible. Anyone who doubts how good vegetarian food can be, or how grease-free an Indian meal might be needs to eat here.

The owner is clearly passionate about food and is enthusiastic to explain the dishes, find out what you like and match you to the food, as a sommelier would to a wine. As a self-confessed foodie I loved it! The food is also unlike anything you will have had in another Indian restaurant.

If I may make a couple of comments, the owner does provide a little too much pressure to order more food than is necessary, and when we went (Nov 2012) the table service provided by the eastern european staff wasn't great, though hopefully this will have changed by now.

The open kitchen is a plus, and the enthusiasm of the owner (and his micromanagement of the kitchen!) make this a place we'll definitely return to.

“An excellent find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

Tramping around Southampton in the pouring rain looking for a restaurant a few hours after the QE2, QM and QV had all disembarked wasn't the most pleasant of experiences, so we were delighted when we came across an Indian restaurant that had room for us.

The manager came and introduced himself, before making some suggestions of meals that we ought to try. Not normally something I'd normally expect (or indeed want) at a restaurant, but he was extremely agreeable, and we were all very glad to listen to his advice. Everything was delicious, and it wasn't until we were halfway through the main courses that I realised that it was a vegetarian restaurant.

An excellent experience, and I will certainly return next time I'm in Southampton.
