My fiancée & I had a great 3 night stay at The Retreat recently. We booked the Emanuel suite and found everything as described; the room was very well appointed, spotlessly clean and well maintained. The location is convenient for the seafront and for old Portsmouth (15 - 20 minutes walk away) and it’s also quiet, so you’re guaranteed a good night’s sleep. Breakfast was excellent with quality ingredients and splendid presentation. Mark & Sian were perfect hosts with plenty of restaurant and pub suggestions – ‘Rosie’s Wine Bar’; ‘The hole in the wall’ and ‘The King Street Tavern’ are great places if you’re after some good food and real ale. I highly recommend The Retreat.

Just like to say we enjoyed our stay at the Reteat as well. We stayed in the Franklin Suite and it was everything it said on the web site with a little bit more. Good decor and very well presented and tasty breakfast. The hosts are just what you need when you are new to an area , welcoming and have ideas of where to go for a night out.. Thanks and I hope we can stay again sometime.

What can we say that hasn't already been put in !!? Came upon the Retreat Guest House whilst looking on t' internet for a place to stay for an overnight stop in Pompey. COULDN'T HAVE MADE A BETTER CHOICE!! The proprieters Mark & Sian were warm, welcoming hosts. The room ( Ward suite ) was impressively furnished , and a good nights sleep was had on a very comfy bed. The breakfast in the morning was served with a smile, and was lovely. We have taken quite a few business cards from the Retreat, to pass on to our friends..... what a pity ,because as they say ... If you get a good ' thing', keep it to yourself !!

Originally we booked two nights at the Retreat guesthouse, in the Ward Suite, however on the drive up to Portsmouth we had a car crash, wrote off the car and had to spend a couple of hours at the hospital. Sian and Mark were wonderful, helping us to find a way of getting to the Salvage yard, and Mark's sense of humour gave us a smile. Having had our first night/day ruined by our car accident we asked to stay an extra night and they did have a room free, the Franklin room. The whole house was decorated to a brilliant standard, each room had its own charm and both the rooms we stayed in were impeccably clean. The English breakfast was amazing, I’ve never seen such wonderful presentation, and it kept us filled till dinner time which was a huge bonus! The choice of cereals was really nice as well. Location was great it was a short walk to Southsea shops and we enjoyed lovely walks along the seafront to get to Portsmouth town centre and Gunwarf Quay. Fell in love with the area and especially the house, it’s just sad to come home!

  • Liked — Everything, Mark and Sian really welcome you into their beautiful house
  • Disliked — can't think of anything.

We stayed here the night after our wedding, for a romantic night without our 3 children and it was PERFECT! The guest house is in a great spot, close to restaurant & bars....only just over 5 min walk to sea. We went to Oddballs for our meal, which I highly recommend.
Mark and Sian were very friendly and helpful.
We stayed in the Franklin room, which had a four poster bed, and was decorated beautifully - no musty fousty smelling rooms here!
Breakfast was lovely...Dorset cereals, fresh fruit and a gorgeous full English breakfast.
We enjoyed our whole stay - it was just what we needed after a hectic wedding day, and a fantastic little retreat of peace and tranquility away from our chaotic life!!!!
Highly recommended!
