“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2011

The Retreat Guest House has loads of character and charm. We stayed in Ward room which is generous and very well appointed. There was a good Wifi internet connection. Mark was a great host and prepared us a fantastic breakfast. Mark also provides a permit for on street parking during the stay.

Well situated in Southsea it is just a short walk to the coast. Portsmouth Historical Dockyard is only a 30 minute walk away, so is manageable without the car. We really enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this wonderful B&B.

“This is a quality B&B that sets the standard”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2011

Agree with all the positive comments - the Retreat is a credit to Mark & Sian who are great hosts. This is a large house full of character and original victorian features with all the modern conveniences you'll need. Public areas immaculately clean, light and airy. We stayed in the Ward Suite for two nights. This is a large double room with superb bathroom and ample storage space. The breakfast was excellent, fresh fruit, juices and great traditional full English.
Mark & Sian could not be more helpful or enthusiastic in steering you to the bars, restaurants and sights that are all in close proximity.
The Southsea promenade is a treat for strolling at any time and you can be in the centre of Portsmouth in 20 minutes walk.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Ward Suite. Large, comfortable and immaculately clean

“Very welcoming, had a lovely stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2011

Me and my boyfriend stayed here recently and we both had a very nice stay. The owners were very welcoming, warm and friendly. We stayed in the Franklin Suite with the four poster bed. It was modern, comfortable, very clean and had a very nice sleep there. Breakfast was very nice too, lots of choice and quality was very good. Location is very central especially for Southsea where there are lots of good shops and restaurants. Overall, good value for money, would defintely return and recommend to anyone.

“Leaving other B&Bs in their wake”

£100 seems to be a tipping point for B&Bs, so you expect to get something a little special when one just nudges over the mark. The Retreat Guest House at Portsmouth delivers perfectly. The rooms are exceptionally large and very tastefully decorated. At no time do you feel like you are staying in someone’s spare room as you can at some B&Bs. Mark and Sian manage to walk that difficult line between being friendly informal hosts while still maintaining a standard of professionalism about the place that ensured everything was perfect. The house had a feeling of spaciousness and light. I particularly appreciated that there was a guest’s lounge room that offered space to sit and relax other than in your room. The whole house is full of character and charm and while it has been renovated to make it as comfortable as possible, Mark and Sian have retained the character that makes the place so special.
The bed was fabulously comfortable; soft mattress, plump pillows and a duvet as thick and warm as you could want. The bathroom had been refitted with a hint of 60s retro that was a little quirky but still felt modern and of course exceptionally clean. Breakfast was generous with a wide range of cereals, fruit and yoghurts as well as a delightfully hearty English offering.
The Retreat is in a very suburban location, about a mile or so from the Historic Dockyard (and shopping at Gunwharf Quays) and a little less from Southsea Common. Both are in easy walking distance. There is a school opposite so parking is a challenge. Mark and Sian allowed us to park in their driveway, which was very generous but I’m not sure where others would have parked if they arrived on a school day.
On the whole it is a beautiful place to stay that justifies the slightly higher price tag in comfort, cleanliness, space and character. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

“A hidden gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2011

I stayed here for my wedding night in July, and really loved it. The house is absolutely beautiful and the rooms large and spacious. Mark and Sian were fantastic hosts and made us feel very welcome. The breakfast was yummy too. This really is a hidden gem and we will definately be recommending this to friend and family on their trips to Portsmouth
