“Lovely hotel - very pleased with our stay!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2013

This is lovely hotel that is tastefully furnished. Found this hotel while looking for reasonably priced hotel as all the other major hotels were coming up expensive. I was able to get this fabulous hotel for £63 breakfast included for two while the Ibis which is nowhere near as nice was charging £61.

The room was lovely and tastefully decorated, the room we had a bit small, but for the price we paid it was more than adequate. There was a wardrobe in the room for storage, a kettle with lots of quality tea, coffee and hot chocolate options. The bathroom was also a delight with towels and l'occtaine toiletries.

Breakfast was good as well with lots to choose and the option of paying for a cooked breakfast.

The staff were extremely helpful and bent over to help us when our train was cancelled and we ended up arriving at the hotel well after check-in had closed. They made arrangements for a member of staff to let us in which just demonstrates the outstanding customer service they provide.

There is a shopping centre about 5 mins walk from the hotel. The pier is not too far as well - about 10 - 15 mins walk and if you are really keen on walking then you could easily walk to Gunwarf. There are maps at the reception area of the hotel.

Would definitely go back!!!

This is a good little hotel on the Portsmouth coast, Southsea area. Chose to stay here while visiting Portsmouth based on the previous good reviews. Upon arrival we were shown to our room which was actually just across the street as the hotel is across two buildings. The room was pleasant and quite open. Being across in the other building is not a problem as was probably quieter as no staff and only a few other guests.

Parking can be a problem as the streets are narrow and full of residents and other hotel guests (plus other hotels). We had a space upon first arrival, though after going out in the evening, returned to find nowhere to park. The hotel did advise though that we could park in a next door car park, luckily there was one space left.

Breakfast in the morning was nice, continental was included but the cooked breakfast was at a supplement.

Overall the stay was good and we may visit the hotel again if returning to the area.

Had a lovely one night stay at The Florence House Hotel. Rooms are large, bright and decorated in a very tasteful style. Lots of well thought out little touches and a free, delicious Continental breakfast was included. Staff are very friendly and extremely accommodating. We will be back!

As a frequent visitor to Southsea (we love it there) we now only stay at one of the Mercer Group of hotels. I believe Florence House was the first one they opened, and we stayed here last month. The staff across the four hotels all seem to be one big happy family, and all seem to genuinely want to do their very best for you. We never feel "awkward" asking for anything, and really appreciate the relaxed atmosphere.

If we arrive early on our first day – as we usually do – they always do their best to get our room ready as soon as possible (before the official check-in time). Of course, this can't always be done and they are always happy to store our luggage if we want to go back out again (perhaps after a nice cup of coffee!)

The rooms are comfortable and, importantly, quiet. The breakfast is delicious (particularly enjoy the smoked salmon with scrambled eggs on muffins) and there are a small selection of very good room service meals available in the evenings. There is also an option to dine at their restaurant located in one of their other hotels - we usually walk there, takes about 10 minutes along the sea-front, but I think they offer a free taxi ride if required. Again, great staff, very friendly, (and that includes the 2 chefs, who are very happy to "adapt" the menu to suit my fussy children and onion allergic wife!).

All in all, just like staying with family!

Room Tip: All of their rooms are different, and individually designed. Have a look around their website, and...

3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

We stayed at Florence House for 3 nights from 19th May. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean. However, we had a room on top floor, it was room 5 if I remember correctly. At first sight it seemed fine, but the bathroom was unaccepable. It had windows all round - clear glass, no blinds. OK the tower block was a distance away, but it felt as if we were showering in the middle of the high street! At first we thought nobody could see us from that distance, but at night when lights were on in tower block, we could see people in their homes - so it is obvious the same in reverse is possible. Maybe that is why the centre main light in our bathroom did not work!!
Even though the bed was so comfy, the next morning we asked to be moved - which the staff arranged with no problem. However, the shower in the new bathroom kept running hot and cold, so that made showering uncomfortable. Unfortunately the bed in the second room was very uncomfortable and had seen better days. I think the room number was 3. Anyway, it is a shame as the hotel was clean and the staff were very friendly, but I do not think we would stay there again.

Room Tip: Do not have a room on top floor - two of the rooms have windows in bathroom with clear glass - feels...

Thank you for your review. We were pleased to help you with your reservation and offer a complementary upgrade to one of your party on arrival.

We are very surprised and bemused by your comments about Room 5 bathroom. Room 5 is one of our most popular Executives - quiet and tucked away at the top of the building with comfortable arm chairs and a King bed. Never in all the 7 years guests have stayed in the room has anyone mentioned the small section of window round the top of the bathroom. The tower block you refer to is two full roads away, there is a street, a row of houses, another street, a large driveway and then the tower block so we cannot see how anyone could possibly see into the bathroom. The shower is at the opposite side of the room to the windows too. We feel your review gives a very misleading impression of one of our popular rooms.

We do hope that staff were able to assist with the issue you had with the shower on the 2nd night and resolve this swiftly for you.

We are sorry you would not return to us due to the bathroom window issue but hope this has not marred your overall experience of the hotel.

Kind regards

All at Florence House

We only stayed for one night on the way to the isle of wight and we were made to feel very welcome. We stayed in Room 2 which is not disabled friendly as it is up stairs ( we knew that) but there is a room down 2 small stairs which apparently is. The room was very " shabby chic" an is advertised as a boutique hotel. It was very clean and bright and fresh and the en suite was exceptionally clean. the bed was comfortable/ Tea and coffee making in the room and you can have room service if you want to. Parking is a bit of an issue as there are only 3 spaces, we were fortunate to get one. We always check on parking, disabled access etc and knew all this before we booked. If you are disabled and choose Room 7 there is an outside door close by which is excellent this saves you going through the front door.If you use a wheelchair this might be an issue as there is no ramp and steps. The continental breakfast was included and it was plentiful, lots of juices, real toast and proper jams and marmalade. Variety of cereals, and lovely fresh fruit and also dried fruit. Cooked breakfast was also available which we didn't have but we did see other guest's breakfast and it certainly looked impressive. We did feel that the room used for breakfast was a little crowded with too many tables and where we had no problem with booking our slot for breakfast I could see some guests not liking that. We paid £69 and it was well worth it. Only slight critisism was the stair carpet was disgusting and really needs replacing.

Room Tip: If you are disabled book Room 7

What a disaster! I found this hotel off trip advisor and after reading the fantastic reviews thought I would book it - last time I trust trip advisor. I booked to stay in the Florence that's what I paid my money for but they put me in the Somerset their sister hotel and just across the road - they both seem equally overpriced and awful so will write my review here. First of all getting there was a a problem its in back streets and parking is a problem we eventually found a place but it was tight and we had to lug our case first to the Florence where you check in then from the Florence to the Somerset and up two or three floors we where put in literally what was the ceiling cavity of the Somerset. It was May so quite cool outside but our room was sweltering - god knows what it is like in summertime - no cooling system and a tiny window which we had full open. We wondered how the hell we would get out if there was a fire. We had a family room which meant a double bed and a rickety sofa bed which was tiny our kids fought for room in it - its really a single not a double. Bathroom also a disaster - it had a bath but no hot water and no water pressure - it would have taken about 2 hours to run a bath so opted for a shower - problem is its hand held also no water pressure and no shower curtain so the floor got soaked and slippery which was a hazard. Breakfast doesn't include anything hot -only toast and rather unappetising croissant a bit of fruit or a box of cereal, all up I thought it was incredibly overpriced at £149 a night.Next time I think we will stay at the holiday inn in Gunwhalf which is in a great area and a bit cheaper (I think). My husband wondered whether the back packers next door was better value I bet the room would have been cooler.

Room Tip: Room 6 Somerset is in the roof space and has no water pressure in the bathroom. It would be unbearab...
