“Beautiful Butterfly Garden”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

It's a really nice place to visit with young children.

The butterfly garden is only open in the summer and is really nice.

It's completely free entry also.

“Small But Much to See”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013

Visited the newly refurbished museum today and it is impressive how much more the ground floor area has been opened up and lightened. The welcome from the staff was warm and informative. Thank You. In conjunction with local schools an exhibit linked with the Butterfly Conservatory and other Natural History items made a fine display. We particularly enjoyed the storybooks that the children had made. We were lucky that on this sunny day the Butterflies were very active and clearly it was popular with visiting families. We were pleased to see that the giant Dinosaur that originated from a Summer Southsea Show in the 1980’s remains, it’s like an old friend. The Farlington Marshes Bird Hide item is well made and details include the background sounds of the Marshes. Not a huge museums, but interesting and ideal for families to make introductions into Local Natural History.

“Small, free and enjoyable for the kids.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2013

Great place to take the children on these rainy days. My grandchildren 4 and 6 years love going there. There is large model dinosaur, and a lovely conservatory - which is filled with butterflies, there are many other stuffed birds and other animals. There are plenty of stairs and narrow corridors so unfortunately not really suitable for disabled.

“Portsmouth visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2013

We really enjoyed the museum. Well worth the visit to explore all the exhibits. Good for young children as they have some hands on items.

“It's OK because it's free!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013

It's free, so I don't like to rate it too low, but it's also a bit depressing.

There's some interesting info re dinosaurs, but if visiting with children, it's too indepth and does not hold their attention past the one large dinosaur model (does anyone else get an odd urge to shake hands with it whilst climbing the stairs?).

There's a few live animals, interesting enough, and these lead on to a butterfly house which (in season and after a few consecutive sunny days - how often has that happened in Britain lately??) can hold a good aray of moths and butterflies. This is the highlight.

Upstairs holds a very moth eaten (stuffed) seal as part of it's ice age exhibit and some fairly interesting info re evolution etc. A mock up bird watching exhibit is well done, but the room with a couple of stuffed animals gives the feeling of a wasted opportunity.

Downstairs, there is a small room with jigsaws and microscopes which younger children enjoy.

The gift shop is very reasonably priced and for such a limited area offers a good selection of items.

A secure buggy park outside is useful to those with young children.

Whatever - it's free, so there's not too much to complain about realy.
