Located in the Old Portsmouth a block from the waterfront, Fortitude Cottage is a cozy retreat. Owners Maggie & Mike Hall are competent, congenial hosts who live adjacent the B&B. They serve a filling, cooked breakfast until 8:45am daily. We saw rooms on the 3rd & 4th floors (US), a bit of a walk-up, but the narrow halls and stairways give it old-world charm. Most impressive is that this place is spotless and extremely well-maintained making it worth the 95 Pounds per night, off-season. My wife and I visited twice in the past 3 months, totaling 5 nights.
In a neighborhood lacking greenery, and with ships passing nearby at all hours, it is still pleasant and located on a two-block, non-descript spit of land surrounded by water on 3 sides. There are pubs, a tea room and the famous battlements in the vicinity, but also two new construction sites and parking lots across the street. A grocery is just past the Cathedral, six blocks away
This B&B is a five-minute taxi ride from the harbor rail station, or 20 minutes on-foot, a circuitous route best first explored from the B&B. It is also about a 20 minute walk to the local mall, and a little farther to attractive downtown Portsmouth and to Southsea.
