“Saturday night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

Family trip to Portsmouth to see the Mary Rose museum and 8 of us stayed on the Saturday night. Hotel is a bit tired in places and our room had the worst view ever, a wall about 8 feet away and an enclosed shaft. This hotel allows dogs and while this is fine by me they should not be allowed to be left in the room alone, unfortunately 2 of the yappiest animals ever were left in the room below and barked non stop on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.
Breakfast was buffet style and everything was tasty and well done. Several functions were taking place over the weekend but this never proved an issue and the staff were pretty good overall.

Thank you for your review of the hotel, I am sorry if you were disturbed by the dogs barking below your room on Saturday and Sunday and I am also disappointed with their owners as the rule is that no dog should be left unattended in a room to avoid this issue, I will look into this further. We do have sea view family rooms available and if you decide to visit Southsea again soon please contact me so I can arrange a special rate for you, best wishes Chris Gilmore GM

Easy to find hotel, but difficult-to-get-to car park, which is small and gets filled by non-residents attending functions. Front of house, restaurant and house-keeping staff were all very helpful and friendly and there is a warm and cosy feel to the place. Food, at breakfast and dinner, was plentiful and well-prepared, with enormous choice and good value (don't understand the earlier comment about the toasters working well, though - they are so poor you have to put the bread through twice!). Our standard double room was spacious, comfortable, well-furnished and recently redecorated. The en-suite was also spacious but the finish was abysmal; shower tap fitted upside down, fixed shower head with no hand-held spray, gaping washbasin plug hole with ill-fitting plug (had to fill it three times to shave), two inch gap under the door, large blobs of silicone sealant all over the tiles and washbasin. There was also a used sticking plaster left in the soap dish - yukk! Don't take a room on the first floor over the kitchens, especially if you don't need to be awake at 6 am, as the staff talk loudly and the swing doors crash every few seconds. Despite the niggles, we'll certainly return but pay extra for a better room.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a room above the first floor and with a sea view, if you can.

We recently celebrated 50 years of marriage at this holes. From booking through to checking out after our overnight stay, celebration meal with family and breakfast, the staff made us feel like Royalty. Staff met us as we arrived and ensured our every wish was catered for. The family meal in the Fearless Room was excellent with first class service, the staff took charge of keeping our presents safe till next morning, and helped carry them to our car. Even at breakfast they checked that we had enjoyed our celebration and made every effort to make us feel "special". Nothing was too much trouble. A big thank you to all the staff (but especially Chris and Sarah). On a par with any P&O cruise ships we have enjoyed since we retired. Lack of air conditioning in our bedroom is the only fault we could find with the hotel, which is we believe is currently undergoing staged refurbishment. Just don't change the standard of service which is first class, friendly and efficient.

Room Tip: Request a Sea view room -it is worth it. Views over the Solent are great, especially when the liners...

Thank for your review of the Hotel, I am really pleased you enjoyed your celebrations with us and I will pass on your comments to both Chris and Sarah, it is also very satisfying to be compared to a cruise ship as we all know how good they can be, best wishes Chris Gilmore GM

We stayed on 5th and 6th of June, we arrived at 1.45 pm, but had to wait for an hour for our room, but it was worth the wait for the fabulous sea view. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, the hotel has seen better days, but the room was very clean and comfortable. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and paid £21 each for a two course buffet meal, I expected it to be the same standard as the Hilton hotels or Holiday Inn, but I was disappointed. The second night we ate in the bar and the meal was of much better quality and we only paid about £10 each. The hotel had a good atmosphere, there were very few younger clients staying it was generally seniors.

It's a pity that the South Parade pier, which is opposite the hotel, is no longer in use as this used to be a hive of activity, it is closed and there doesn't seem to be any future for the pier as no one is interested in updating it. There isn't very much going on near the hotel, but buses run frequently nearby. Gun Warf Quay is very good for shopping and restaurants it is just a ten minute bus ride or thirty minutes walking along the beach. I would stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Pay a bit extra to get a sea view room.

We have just returned from a weekend at this hotel. There were a group of 40 of us and most were pensioners. The staff were superb the food was superb and the rooms were good too. Our room was at the front of the hotel with a fabulous view of the Solent. One of our party had an accident and the staff were very obliging in helping us even going so far as to give us a pillow for her for the journey home so she would be comfortable. They certainly went the extra mile for us. The food in the restaurant was of a very high standard. A large choice and everything was hot and fresh. I would recommend this hotel to everyone.

Room Tip: Rooms with a sea view are fantastic.

Hotel is nicely situated on the seafront opposite (the now closed) pier.

Hotel was originally built in another era and looks to be currently undergoing refurbishment.

Our room on the west side of the building was large with a comfortable bed & a good sized bathroom. Down side was that window did not open and despite the availablity of a fan which only served to circulate the already hot air we felt we were staying in a sauna for the weekend. This led to 2 most uncomfortable nights.

On the back of the bedroom door was a sign encouraging us to leave any valuables in the room safe. It would have been useful if the room safe actually worked.

On the plus side the food & service in the dining room were excellent both at breakfast & dinner. David Toth & Christina both deserve a special mention for the level of service they & their teams provided.

If it hadn't been such an uncomfortable experience with the lack of "air" in our room I would otherwise have not hesitated to give a 'Good ' rating. Sadly this totally spoilt the weekend for us.

Room Tip: Check that the room you are allocated has windows that open otherwise you could be suffocated in hot...

Thank you for your comments and I am sorry the room was to hot for you over the weekend, with fluctuating temperatures over the last couple of weeks it has been difficult to control the heating to suit the majority of visitors especially with our under floor heating and differing age groups but I do hope it does not put you off from visiting us again, best wishes Chris Gilmore GM
