“Delivers what it promises”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2009

I had a very pleasant weekend stay, and a bargain at under £70 a night, given the location. It was clean and pleasant with a good shower (does anyone really need a bath?), very comfy bed, and they offered a reasonable breakfast. The reception staff were pleasant and efficient.

Having stayed in the Holiday Inn at Gunwharf Keys, I think the Ibis beats it hands down in all respects.

rooms very small bathroom fine if you are a child. bed very hard.
very noisy at night, people shouting, laughing, and slamming doors,no joke at 3am.
breakfast very poor, often running out of the basics. only one type of newspaper available, had to go round to local shop for more choice. one person serving at bar. wont be going back in a hurry.

hotel on arrival was ok, check in seemed ok, we asked for papers in the morning, room was very small bathroom was extremly tiny and you had to dry yourself with the door open. food was average however the service was appaling, there were not enough staff, one person running the bar, taking food orders and serving and clearing up. we were not asked our room number or to sign anything to say what we had had. the following morning we went down to get breakfast and that was a joke, there was no food, plates or cutleys, it seemed like a free for all with no one to take your room number, i asked when the food was going to be replaced and was told it was being done, haveing waiting for 10 mins nothing was happening so we went to reception to get the breakfast taken off of our bill, we asked where our papers were and was told they did not offer that service even though we had been told they did the day before and it states in the room info they do, they did agree to knock off the car park cost as a way of apologie. the food on the saturday night was worse and half cold, but with no staff walking around it was incredible hard to complain and not their fault more the mamagements. when it came to check out they had screwed up the bill and had to change it, all in all i would not stay theye again, it was handy and close for the gunwarf but that was it

We stayed at the Ibis for one night. Our room was presentable and clean, although the bathroom was very small.

The hotel is located close to the city centre. We were going to a concert at the Guildhall, which is less than five minutes walk from the hotel.

One thing to be careful of is parking at the hotel. There is a charge for parking, although is reasonable at £3 per night. However, the number of parking spaces is quite limited. We arrived at around 6:45 on a Friday evening and were very lucky to get the last space in the carpark. I'm not sure what alternative parking facilities are available.

Overall, the hotel is ok for short stays in Portsmouth; particularly if you attending an event at the Guildhall.

I have been travelling with business in the Portsmouth area for almost 7 months and have used the Ibis hotel on almost every occasion.

The location is ideal for getting in and out of the city and it is handy for the city centre and the beach front at Southsea. If you are looking for a location that gives you access to all that Portsmouth has to offer this is it.

Coupled with very helpful well informed and pleasant staff I have found every visit to the Hotel to be enjoyable and welcoming.

The rooms are furnished with all your requirements whether you are a business traveller or use the hotel for leisure purposes.

I would certainly recommend the hotel to other users and if I ever find myself in Portsmouth again I will head straight for the Ibis.

We stayed for one night during the week and the rooms were modern, clean and cosy, the location central and the buffet breakfast great value at only £5.

General observations: rooms are very small but clean; check in was efficiently performed by the hotel desk staff who were friendly and helpful in giving me directions/summoning transportation. Food quality at the restaurant (breakfast and dinner) was average, but food service was slow!

Complaints:
a) The TV in my room did not work, necessitating relocation to a different room (away from the other members of our traveling party).
b) The rooms offer internet on a pay as you go basis... however, the keyboard in the new room I was moved to did not work. The staff was unable to locate a replacement keyboard (they tried swapping keyboards from several other empty rooms on the floor, including the room I was moved from, but none worked)... thus, my room did not have internet access during my stay.
c) One of the two elevators was inoperative during our stay. We had to contend with hotel staff for use of the only working elevator... long waits for elevator availability... and particularly inconvenient when checkout time came along.
d) Hotel guests were awakened at 2 AM by a fire alarm... fortunately, it was a false alarm. However, the front desk staff did not notify hotel clients that it was a false alarm... guests had to visit or call the front desk (long wait for phone to be answered) to find out. I consider this to be a serious violation of safety procedures!!!!!

When I asked about the availability of a maintenance person to address the TV, keyboard and elevator issues, I was told that there was no maintenance person on site... or on call. I concluded from staff comments (most expressing frustration) that there was a backlog of other problems in the hotel also awaiting maintenance attention. I might understand this situation happening on a holiday weekend... but this occurred on Thursday and Friday! Apparently higher management does not care!

I will not use this Ibis hotel when I travel in the future... and I will be wary of all Ibis hotels in general. By the way... Ibis has a satisfaction guarantee or your room is free. The Ibis Portsmouth Center did not honor this guarantee when I checked out.
