This hotel is in a great location - I stayed while my husband was working at the Navy Days, so we could spend some time together - it was easy for both of us to get to the Naval Base, and easy for me to get to Gunwharf Quays - a major complex of outlet shops, restaurants and bars. Also, this hotel is a short walk to town, it is about a mile, very easy walk straight to the centre of town if you carry on the same street.
I was greeted at reception by the charming and pleasant staff, handed a key and given directions to my room - on the top floor (there is a lift, but I prefered to take the stairs, to save the lift for the people who needed it). Very nice reception area, with a cafe, bar and restaurant. There is also a leisure club, which I did not venture into.
You do not need to be in the Navy to stay at the Royal Maritime Club, but I suspect much of the clientele is or was. I booked the hotel for myself and my husband (who is in the Navy) and was later told that it was for sailors only, not officers, but we didn't have any problems.
When I arrived at my room at the Royal Maritime Club (formerly the Royal Sailor's Home Club, aka the Home Club), I was completely overwhelmed. The amount of pattern in the room was seriously shocking. I will try to attach a photo.
I felt very safe in the hotel, and it was a quiet location at nighttime - which was great considering how close it was to Gunwharf Quays. It was comfortable and clean. Nothing special or out of the ordinary, but great for a base near the Naval Base and Gunwharf (especially if you are not in your room for long!). I would stay here again.
