“thoroughly deserved Michelin star”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

We stayed overnight Sunday to Monday in mid November on the £200 Come Rain Come Shine Dinner, B and B package. Even at this time of the year and on a Sunday night, the hotel and restuarant were almost full, principally because
1. hotel is in a truly beautiful village location
2. the rooms are very pleasant and comfortable, but not flashy
3. all the staff do the job very, very well, especially in the restaurant, but reception and housekeeping also can't be faulted
4. the Market Menu dinner is spectacularly good and astonishing value

We lived for 13 years in the Cotswolds and know from bitter experience how so many of the hotels and ridiculously expensive gastro pubs boasting celebrity clienteles rip off their customers with bought-in catering and shoddy rooms. This hotel is a genuine rarity - exceptional real cooking, fine accommodation and high quality service throughout. No wonder it stays full.

My husband and I have stayed at Lords of the Manor several times now and it never fails to disappoint. We love it that each time we visit, we stay in a different bedroom. This time we didn't get to see Paul the manager, maybe he was having a well deserved day off? And quiet, kind Andy was away on holiday. We think he is an absolute gem!
This time we were on the Come Rain or Shine package and stayed in Broadwell, which is extremely comfortable and large for one of the 'basic' rooms. There is nothing basic in any of the rooms. Each room has its own charm.
The reception staff were very welcoming and acknowledged us as returning guests. After being shown to our room, we unpacked then headed for the drawing room to sit by the fire. Unfortunately a bird's nest had been in residence in the chimney, but the management had left a thoughtful apology of why there was no roaring fire. We took tea in the peaceful surroundings and then my husband became so comfortable, he snoozed for a while. Such is the way in which being at Lords makes you so relaxed.
Our package included a 3 course meal from the Market Menu. It may say 3 courses, but you have inventive, substantial appetisers in the bar while you peruse the menu and sip a cocktail, then an amuse bouche in the dining room, a choice of rolls, served with two different types of butter and the incredibly moreish beef dripping, followed by your starter, main, a pre-dessert, dessert and the option of tea/coffee and petit fours. The food is exquisite and you will taste food in a form you have never tried before and you will certainly not leave hungry!
The fire in the bar area was roaring and this is where we took our tea and petit fours. The macaroons and chocolates were served to you from a chest, like a large cigar box.
Rachel (married to Matt the Michelin starred chef) manages all the serving staff and interacts really well with all the guests. The staff at Lords work very hard, serving in the evening and then again at breakfast.
After a large breakfast, with many choices, we took a stroll in the garden to see the bog garden and over the bridge to see the swans.
Even with several guests at the hotel, it felt like we had Lords to ourselves. It really is the most peaceful, idyllic place. We have stayed there with blue skies and sunshine in summer and experienced the most magical stay right over Christmas.
On our arrival, we parked our car and walked through the gardens. I turned to my husband and said 'Ahh, home!" This is how Lords make you feel.

Dear Mrs Rees
What a lovely review but how rude of me not to be here for your stay. I have also been holding an investigation into who signed off Andy's holiday - it's quite scandalous.
We are so glad you loved your stay with us, I hope we will see you again soon and that you loved the Autumn colours which are really superb at the moment.
Kind regards
Paul

My Wife and I have just had a wonderful two nights stay at this very special hotel.
The excellent staff were always on hand, but were never intrusive.
We loved the character of the lovely old manor and its lovely grounds.
The food was an absolute delight; so many different flavours and such
superb presentation. The people serving at table complimented the excellent food
by their attention to our every need.
The lovely bedroom was spacious and presented in an English country house manner.
The en suite bathroom was excellent.
Upper Slaughter is the Cotswolds at its very best and that makes it unmissable.
The marriage of this hotel and such a lovely village was surely made in heaven.
My heading says it all: 1st class hotel, first class staff and in a first class area.

A wonderful, peaceful venue with attention to detail and service. Not overstated but very welcoming and luxurious, a must place to stay. I would love to go back again. Quietly tucked away - a great escape. Excellent food too.

Room Tip: Just book it a good room is what it is about.

Dear Elizabeth
Thank you for your review, we love being understated so your review came as a very welcome start to our days work. Of course following your September stay Autumn is now well and truly upon us and I have to say the colours are incredibly vivid this year - it must be the Summer of Rain we had! We do hope you will return soon to Lords of the Manor.
Kind regards
Paul.

Lords of the manor made us feel special from the moment we arrived with friendly staff greeting before we could get out of the car. There is a calm but thorough professionalism about all the staff and an unassuming luxury about all the rooms. One of the most amazing characteristics is that we have been 3 times before and each time there was at least 6 months between visits and yet the manager and staff not only recognised us but went out of their way to talk to us as if it was last week. It is a quality experience in all respects and we have not found better anywhere in the UK.

Room Tip: We have been 3 times and have never found a room that is anything but brilliant

We stayed at the Lords of Manor at a wedding this weekend. The hotel has a lovely setting in the Cotswolds and has a small intimate feeling about it. The venue was great for our friend's wedding, even if the weather had turned ghastly cold. I can well recommend it for such an event. The room was well furnished with a very large comfy bed and we were only in their basic room.

On the downside the car park is small, so we had to park in the street and I wouldn't even attempt to find the place without a sat nav. The staff at the wedding breakfast seemed very nervous and a couple the guests who arrived at our table arrived a little late so lost their starter and weren't allowed it back! I felt the food was OK, but not up to what I would have expected for a michelin star, but perhaps a wedding is not a fair representation. Finally the bar prices are steeper than I would have expected, almost certainly we are paying for that star!

However the breakfast the following morning was excellent, even though we were down earlier than the official start time the waiter was happy to serve us and the breakfast was the best I have had in years.

Dear Guest
Thank you for your feedback - I am glad you will recommend us and I am sorry the arctic winds were blowing on Saturday, however at least it was not raining. It was a fantastic wedding and we were privileged to host it, particularly with such lovely guests. The Birds of Prey display on the front lawn was incredible.

Thank you for your constructive comments, Weddings are somewhat different in the structure of the menu and the menu choice is orientated towards the tastes of the Bride and Groom, we had fantastic feedback from them about the day. I do hope you will return and try the Restaurant out as I know you would rate the experience highly. It is a shame about the late couple but 25 minutes into a Dinner service for 50 people it becomes a little difficult to put the breaks on and allow them to catch up but I am sure we can learn from this.

I hope we see you at Lords again soon.
Kind regards,
Paul

This hotel exceeded expectation. IF you are looking for a special place to celebrate an anniversary, birthday etc, look no further. Stunning quiet location. Amazing food and fantastic hotel staff.
The 3 course a la carte menu for £65 is actually about 6 courses. We went into the restaurant at 7pm and finished with coffee at 11pm. A dining experience.
