“A pleasant find in Stroud”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2013

Faced with London friends coming down by train to Gloucestershire only for lunch, to celebrate a birthday, the heat was on to find somewhere local--and good and conducive to conversation. Jrools succeeded in all these things--and were up to the standards the visitors from town have come to expect when eating out! With just enough other customers to give the room life--but not anything as much as to impair hearing and conversation or timing of service for that matter--with a quirky old building to add ambience--with a decent menu, good service and all realistically-priced--we had a great time and certainly all the boxes were ticked. We were given the option of eating in their not-quite-landscaped courtyard (it was an unusually nice early-summer weekday) but were glad to sit indoors at a comfortable corner table to enjoy a tasty meal. I would suggest that the only slight minus was the fairly primitive loo which I'm sure is their next project once the yard is fully transformed. I would certainly lunch there again.

“Excellent food- very friendly service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

I visited here with a friend recently and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the friendliness of the service.

They were very accommodating- we ordered bread and olives to share as a starter and they provided olive oil and balsamic vineger when we asked for it despite not being on the menu. They were not stingy on the olives either, providing a mountain of very tasty mixed varieties.

I had lemon sole for main which was cooked to perfection and my friend had the goats cheese and vegetable crumble- and interesting and flavoursome vegetarian option which is hard to come by in many restaurants. They were also more than happy to substitute the olive salad for an alternative side.

The wine list provided some nice varieties but was a bit on the expensive side. I think it would benefit from having one or two cheaper options. However they did have a very good 75cl bottle of Normandy cider which we shared and which was an interesting alternative to wine, complementing the flavours of the food superbly.

Unfortunately we were too stuffed for pudding but the options looked very tempting!

The atmosphere was very pleasant and the staff couldn't do enough to help. I would definitely return for another meal here.

“Stunning”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013 via mobile

We had a fantastic meal at Jrool whilst away for a weekend in the Cotswolds. We'd originally called in for breakfast on market day (eggs benedict to be recommended) which was so good we booked for dinner.

We weren't disappointed. This is a tiny restaurant owned by a charming couple - it was fantastic to see our meal being prepared. Great service and fantastic quality ingredients - with a chef who is clearly passionate about food. We both had pâté to start, then chicken and brill. The brill, in particular, was stunning - matched with mussels and chorizo.

This restaurant is a step above everything else we found in the area - highly recommended. We'll be back whenever we are next in the vicinity.

“Lovely little restaurant in the heart of Stroud”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

We stumbled upon this restaurant, had a quick look at the menu and decided we had to try the food. I had a delicious chorizo and crab gratin, and my partner a salmon fishcake and chilli sauce. The food was delivered quickly, and looked very well presented - both with salad, and mine with bread. We also added a side of fries to share. I thought the food was absolutely delicious - only thing I would say was that the gratin wasn't quite as 'steaming' hot as I would have liked it. My partner enjoyed his salmon fishcake - but had two small grumbles- there wasn't enough food (he came out still a bit peckish - but he does have a large appetite: and that the tea was served in a coffee mug). However, all in all I thought it was a lovely little restaurant, and would definitely recommend to friends who fancied a nice lunch.
