“Lovely hotel stay, we'll be back, but...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

Really enjoyed our stay and the meal in the restaurant was one of the best we've eaten, worth every penny. Location is lovely and we thought the hotel itself was luxurious although the quirky decor probably won't be to everyone's taste.

Our stay was spoiled a bit by the breakfast on our last day, which is why this isn't an 'excellent' rating. A very distracted and inefficient waitress/receptionist coupled with a 'pre-cooked' heated up breakfast was not what what we were expecting. She came back 3 times to ask the table behind us how they wanted their eggs - after bringing scrambled eggs instead of poached for my partner. Later, after ringing the bell on reception 3 times, we had to go down and get her to let us check out, no apology for the delay or acknowledgment of the breakfast issues. Shame, as the rest of our experience was so good.

We'll stay here again and will definitely eat in the restaurant, but won't have breakfast here unless it is in with the room rate, it's not worth £15 each. However, we felt that our stay was good value at the rate we paid - & the evening meal was superb.

Room Tip: We liked Room 8, fairly small but luxurious, lovely view, good shower. Could do with plug on wall fo...

We stayed 3 nights for our daughter's wedding and enjoyed every minute of it. Parking can be difficult but we always found a place. We booked a few rooms well ahead and confirmed by email, but a friend was offered the same rooms that we had had confirmed so just be careful on that. Otherwise staff were delightful, lovely views, great breakfast, excellent service and we would be delighted to stay again.

Room Tip: All the rooms are different and we didn't see any we wouldn't have wanted to stay in.

Beautiful building in a stunning village. Some nice quirky decorative touches and lovely that they give you a little gift every evening (Molton Brown goodies and sweets). Service attitude was very good and everyone extremely pleasant. Thought the place lacked atmosphere a little and the bar meal was average at best but breakfast was absolutely superb. General quality of the room was pretty nice but we thought it was punching above its weight a little bit for the price. All in all a good experience, we'd probably stay again. Probably more suited to a couple than family with young children.

My partner and I booked the food lovers package for our anniversary.
We found the place quite easily thanks to sat-nav and signs.
When we arrived, we found it difficult to park. There were no spaces and we had to park right in the entrance - wasn't ideal but didn't have much of a choice.
We checked in and were shown our room by a very helpful man - who was lovely and charming thorugh-out our visit.
The room was lovely (Detmar room) - 4 poster bed, lovely decoration, high quality tea and coffee products and molton brown smellies.
She shower was out of this world and we throughly enjoyed using it.
My only gripe with the room is that some of the decor needed touching up. There were scrapes behind the bathroom door which you can see when sitting on the loo and some of the wall decoration near the bed were peeling away - absolutley minor things and had no bearing on our stay but if I am paying a lot of money for a room, I expect those little things to be taken care of.
Our package came with a half bottle of wine and fruit platter which we had outside whilst playing scrabble (one of the games on offer from the hotel) which was a lovely setting.
Dinner was amazing - we throughly enjoyed every course and the wines supplied with them. We appriciated the waiters and front of house manager asking if everything was ok, as it showed they cared!
Breakfast the next day was again delicious and loads to choose from - I was especially impressed with the home made fruit yoghurt.
All in all our stay was very enjoyable and we had a great time - would stay here again without a doubt

We first stayed here last year and had a superb couple of days, we were not disappointed the second time around. It was just a 2 night midweek break, not a special occassion, but Painswick is in such a great location, edge of the Cotswolds, close enough to motorways, easy access.
The building has so much style, the interiors have been carefully designed and may not be to everyone's taste but the overall impression is striking.
We stayed in room 11 first time, room 18 this time. Great views, slightly quirky design, grand bathrooms, Molton Brown toiletries, plenty of space.
The staff could not be more charming and helpful, from check in to check out.
The highlight is the restaurant, Juniper. We ate there both nights. It has just received its 3rd AA Rosette, the food is exemplary, beautifully prepared with excellent ingredients, charming presentation and extremely personable and helpful staff. The wine list isn't over long, but very much to our taste and most people will have a decision to make between several bottles/producers for their favourite.
Can't think of anything that's not to like about this hotel and we spend approximately 17 weeks a year living in hotels. Go visit, you won't be disappointed.

We stayed at Cotswolds88 for two nights, in a Detmar room. The building itself is beautiful, and Painswick is idyllic. I think I understand what they've tried to achieve with the eclectic decor, and in some areas it really works - the bar and upstairs lounge area were great. However, in other rooms it just feels poorly put-together, and the glowing egg on a plinth in the dining room had us laughing all through the meal.

Our room itself was very comfortable and perfectly spacious, despite being one of the smaller rooms on offer. The bed was large, and the decor less in-your-face than in the rest of the hotel, which was something of a relief. We had a great view out onto the hotel garden and across the valley, and it was very quiet. Staff were very accommodating and we enjoyed the free newspapers.

We dined in the restaurant on our second night, turning down the option of a "surprise" tasting menu and instead opting for mains and deserts from the cringeworthy a la carte menu ("textures of beetroot etc."). I had a lamb dish, which was beautifully cooked but over-fussy, with a creamy sauce dribbled over it when I would have preferred to stick with the delicious natural jus. There's an extensive wine list to choose from and we enjoyed a cocktail in the bar beforehand, but it is all quite pricey. The service was a little over-attentive and at times felt oppressive, with the maitre d' rushing around in a sweat and repeated checks on whether we were enjoying the food. I just felt the whole thing would have been much more enjoyable if it was a little more relaxed.

Painswick is a great location for walks around the surrounding villages. I'd really recommend dinner at The Falcon, around 200m from the hotel, and the Butcher's Arms in nearby Sheepscombe as alternative eateries.

Our stay in this hotel was fantastic. We felt as though this was a real treat for ourselves from the moment we arrived. Our room was really beautifully decorated with a four poster bed and a lovely view from the window. Plus the bathroom was pretty luxurious too! However, we immediately went back downstairs to order afternoon tea. We were asked where we would like it served and opted for the lounge, which was really warm and comfortable. The sandwiches, cakes and tea were lovely and we probably ate too much given that we had booked in to the restaurant that evening! But somehow we managed it! After having a drink and a peruse of the menu in the bar (which had a lovely atmosphere and a very helpful barman who had lots of suggestions for putting a twist to a drinks) we were led through to the stunning restaurant. This really felt like a luxurious experience as everything on the menu was just delicious. The service was attentive and everything arrived at the perfect pace to really enjoy the meal.
The thing about this place was the little touches. For example a member of staff coming up to the room to offer complimentary sweets during the evening! It was a lovely stay and we shall definitely be going back!
