We booked a table for 10 for the early sitting. On arrival, we were greeted warmly, coats taken and shown to the table. There is a bar area which you could use for an aperitif but we agreed with the staff that as they needed the table bcak at 9, going to the table would be the best strategy. We were made aware of the table restriction at the time of booking and was not a problem.
Drink orders were taken efficiently as soon as we were seated and arrived quickly.
The menu is of the ''agony of choice'' variety. Quite eclectic but favouring red meat. You can see the menu for yourself at the web site, so I'll get into the food.
I had the tempura tiger prawns to start. The batter was light and the sauce good but there was no way these were ''tiger'' prawns, these were ''kitten'' prawns...way too small!
The main course:
Good - everyone who had the steak, whether T-bone, sirloin and fillet was not disappointed. Great texture, well cooked, simply presented with good sauces. Not sure whether the ''triple cooked'' chips are any better than ''single'' or ''double'' cooked but they were good. The beef wellington was the stand out best dish, very very good indeed and highly recommended.
Bad - fish (and anything not steak). My wife ordered the monkfish. The description on the menu made the dish sound fabulous. Unfortunately what arrived was a lukewarm assortment of ingredients accompanied by a lump of monkfish our dog would have struggled to tear into! The dish went back (a glass of prosecco appeared as apology - very good). The dish then re-appeared 10 minutes later (most of us had then finished our mains) - it was hotter but the monkfish was of the same poor quality. My neighbour also noted that her Cornish Rarebit was very very boring...
So to summarise the food - go for the meat, avoid the fish, you won't go wrong!
We went for the house merlot and sauvignon blanc - both very good and very gluggable!
The service was good, highly visible, pleasant and responsive. I can only surmise that the kitchen brigade is setup for cooking chunks of red meat and not so comfortable with the delicacies of fish...
All in all, it was a very pleasant evening with fabulous company in a restaurant that clearly has a good product backed up with good staff with only one or two issues around some elements of the menu that need to be addressed. Would definitely go back.
