“Great staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2013

It is amazing how your stay in a hotel can be made or otherwise by the staff. Thistle must give them all smiling lessons here as everyone was so pleasant and helpful, not something you can say for every hotel, especially one that is part of a large group.
Another plus was a superb dinner and one of the best buffet breakfasts around. Again some other chains may like to take note
We visit Cheltenham fairly regularly and this is our second stay here and probably not the last

We had a wonderful three nights staying here The staff were great and helped in everyway possible to make our stay comfortable. The hotel was busy with Christmas events but we still had great attention to detail.
It was quiet and pleasant.
Easy access to Cheltenham by taxi about £10 also heard a 94 bus

Cheltenham is blessed with some excellent hotels near the town centre but I found myself with a very last minute booking at the Thistle, It was several years since my last visit and I was expecting the same, bland, conference hotel. But there has been a big change in the level of service. From the friendly and professional receptionist, to Samuel and his colleagues, including Tom in the restaurant, the customer service was never less than excellent and the attention to detail was first class - starting with the welcome mulled wine and mince pie on arrival. There was a glitch with my LastMinute.com booking, but I was quickly offered a complimentary drink in the bar while it was dealt with. Given that the leisure facilities at the Thistle are not matched by some of the much more expensive town centre hotels, I expect to be back again to see if these high standards are being maintained. Well done to everyone for excellent service!

Rooms nice, having been refurbished recently, only thing that does need doing is either windows replaced or refurbished to as they dont seem to close completely as the seal has worn away meaning they aren't air tight or whistle proof!!! Staff are very eager to impress but can be a bit in your face at times, but better than being ignored I guess. Restaurant needs a bit of time spent on the quality of food leaving the kitchen especially on the roast night, the salad and starters were more Berni Inn than a hotel restaurant

the staff at the hotel were very helpful and polite. We had an executive room and were a little disappointed that the bed was 2 singles pushed together. Shame we had to pay for the car park too, however the food at breakfast was excellent.

I booked a day at the races and splashed out more than usual on a one night standard room with breakfast and dinner for £143.65 + £5 parking at The Thistle. I'd checked the reviews, built up an appetite for the menu and had received two emails prior to our stay saying how much Thistle were looking forward to our stay! The hotel was easy to find. On arrival, the receptionist looked the booking up and said we were staying two nights, to which I corrected her by saying it was only one. She then explained that breakfast was served until 10.30 (in actual fact it was 11.00 according to the room manual), she asked us what time we wanted dinner so she could book us in. Room directions were given and our parking card was authorised. On entering the room it felt cold, the source of which was discovered coming from the windows that were closed but allowing an excessive amount of cold air into the room. After winding the air conditioning up to hot, we felt we could cope just for one night. The room & bathroom were pleasantly very clean and spacious. Being petty, one chair had staining on which I covered with a towel before use, one electric plug socket did not work and the t.v. took 10 attempts to turn on. There was road noise but this did not keep us awake. The carpet was spotless, the beds were really clean and comfy (very important for me) and even the hair dryer was new. Now the major disappointment. We went to dinner at the booked time and were shown to a table by staff. We were then given a menu to look at that was a self service buffet style menu d'hote and told it would cost £20.00 per head. The menu was a total disappointment for a saturday night as it simply replicated a "£10 pub sunday lunchtime carvery menu" and was no resemblance to the menu advertised on the internet or provided in the guest rooms. Roast beef with yorkshire pudding or roast pork! We queried if it was the only menu available to which we were told yes because there were several Christmas parties on that night. As the evening progressed other tables querying the menu were differently advised they could order from a further a la carte menu but would have a long wait for food. We had not been given this choice when querying and it became quite clear information was conflicting and vague between staff members. We had chicken pate for the starter which was totally bland and boring. The roast beef was over-cooked, dry and solid. The limited choice of veg were limp pieces of carrot, limp beans and uninspiring tasteless potatoes. No other veg and no stuffing. The few desserts looked totally unattractive. Is it possible to ruin a fruit salad - apparently yes. Grapes with brown bruises on and juice that simply tastes of water. It was evident this meal had been cooked hours in advance so chefs could concentrate on other things. To rub salt into wounds, tea and coffee is is not provided at the end of the meal and is charged extra. Breakfast the following morning was a turn around and could not be faulted. The issues were addressed with reception and the cost of our bottle of wine was taken off the bill as a gesture of good will. On returning home and checking the internet, it appears we had been entitled to eat from the a la carte menu for the price I paid after all. We will not be returning as we have been short changed as the evening meal was very, very poor and certainly not value for money even with the cost of wine deducted. The room only or b&b is a much better deal. Hotels need to remember that residents support the hotel throughout the whole year not just at Christmas and keep staff up-to-date with resident entitlements!

Room Tip: Avoid room 008 if staying longer than one night. Poor window!
