“Good, but overpriced.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

This was my first stay in Cheltenham, and was surprised at the inflated price for decidedly ‘average’ hotel rooms, even though there was no racing. The Thistle hotel is certainly one of these. £95.00 for an overnight stay, without breakfast (that was an extra £10.00), and being charged a further £10.00 to park my car is not good value. Nice room, but not worth the money.

Bathroom was very dated and basic. Flooring in bathroom was loose and unpleasant.

All Staff very helpful. Lift didn’t work, thankfully my room was only on first floor, and both lifts and stairs a long way from reception.

I was travelling alone on business so didn’t want to eat in the restaurant, so had a beer (just 1!) and a pizza in the bar, and didn’t get much change from £20.00.

Tea and coffee in Room.

Not sure if I’d use again. Nothing fundamentally wrong, just overpriced.

We got married at the Thistle Hotel in Cheltenham on 9th Feb 2013 and stayed there for two nights, along with a lot of our guests. I would highly recommend the hotel for a wedding, a stay and also the restaurant. The service was excellent, the food was superb and the rooms were lovely. All of our guests were impressed with the venue and it was a very reasonable price. We had 55 people at the service and wedding breakfats and the food served was of excellent quality and hot. Nothing was too much trouble. Our wedding organiser was brilliant and from the time of enquiry to the actual day she was brilliant. I would highly recommend couples to tie the knot here.

Room Tip: We had the honeymoon suite which was luxurious, jacuzzi bath, tea and coffee making facilities and t...

Just got back from a two day break at this hotel, cannot praise it enough, staff brilliant, nothing too much trouble, food excellent, breakfast brilliant. Well done. Very handy for the bus stops, travelled both to Cheltenham and Gloucester great bus service also all in all good trip, hope to be able to come again.

Room Tip: Think ours was very good but believe some are upgraded.

I paid for an Executive Room, but the room was far from that. Small and the only things that made it feel like an Exec were the bathrobe, slippers and toiletries. I paid for a double and got two singles zipped together. Cheap!
There were hairs in the bed. Long and short. The bedding was worn. I stupidly didn't check the bed until 11pm as I'd been working. Wish I had, but was too tired to to anything about it then.
The Bath looked dirty due to limescale around taps and a cheap 'Asda' labelled facecloth that was shedding thread made the room feel cheaper.
Dinner was ok, but my desert (Choc trio mousse cake) was vile. Didn't taste of anything.
Sleep wasn't the best as hotel room doors slam easily so had a lot of banging doors through the night.
I was furious to have Housekeeping banging on my door at 8.20am whilst in the shower. Why????? I paid effectively until 12pm checkout. If I'd wanted to sleep I should've been able to. I confronted the staff member and she didn't understand me and just pointed to her watch and said '8.30am'!!! Unbelievable!!!
Wi-Fi is outrageously expensive. Refused to use and pay for. Why is it not free in a business hotel?
Breakfast wasn't great. Yes lots of choice, but Waitress was pushy. Coffee too strong. Toast didn't toast and eggs (poached) too vinegary.
Overall very dispppointed. Ironically, I stayed here on business 2 years ago and think it was better than. Feel a bit ripped off.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are away from road, but still a lot of aircraft noise.

My husband and I paid £138.00 for 2 nights bed and breakfast and one evening meal in February. We couldn't fault it. The room was very clean and comfortable with a huge bed. The food was incredibly good, breakfast was huge with lots of choice such as cooked, continental, cereals, juices, coffee or tea. The house wine was incredibly good too. The staff were outstanding, particularly the restaurant staff at both breakfast and evening meals. They were so friendly, polite, attentive, prompt, pleasant to one another, impeccable manners - we were quite shocked at just how brilliant they were. Very impressed indeed. We would thoroughly recommend it and will definitely go back. Superb weekend.

Room Tip: Worth upgrading to get the rooms away from the main road but otherwise very good.

We stayed here for 2 reasons, it was close to a party we were going to and it offered a 3 bed room for a reasonable price. With a 16 year old son we need a proper bed rather than some kind of camp bed or sofa bed and hotels offering this at a good price seem to be few and far between. The location is nothing special - close to B&Q...and it is looking decidedly worn around the edges. The staff were very helpful though. Firstly printing off maps for us as we didn't know where we were going exactly. Secondly, when the room nex to us still had their music on at full blast at 2am coming down to the room, ascertaining it was empty (our neighbours had left the music on when they went out..) and turning it off. The next morning, we paid the bill. Were then asked if we'd enjoyed our stay. Said 'hardly, given we were kept awake half the night'. Receptionist then promptly took the breakfast and parking charge off the bill. We hadn't expected or asked for that - not really their fault if fellow guests behave in an anti social way, but appreciated all the same.

We stayed for two nights at the Thistle Cheltenham at the beginning of February and were very satisfied with the whole experience. The room was appropriately sized and the bathroom likewise. There was plenty of hot water and a slip mat and grab rail for the shower. The beds were comfortable and the bedding clean and well presented. There was little noise from other rooms although the hotel was fairly full.

The gym was well equipped and all machines in working order. There were plenty of weights and mats for personal programmes. The water in the spa was surprisingly warm and much appreciated on one of the coldest days of the year.

The staff were unfailingly pleasant and helpful. If you stopped to watch or wait someone would come up and ask if you needed help.

Two breakfasts and one dinner were included in or deal. Breakfast was a buffet with all the ingredients you would expect. Some individuality was available in how eggs were cooked but you needed to ask for this.

Dinner was perfectly good but not someting to write home about.

All in all this was a very good example of chain hotel.
