Our Friday night tours to find the best eating places near our home in Upper Rissington have sometimes taken us quite far afield, however one of the very best was right under our noses in Bourton-on-the-Water, not renowned for doing 'cheap' Bourton, known as the Venice of the Cotwolds, has numerous eateries due to the vast amount of visitors it generates. We had used the Old Manse for breakfast 'El Fresco' in the summer, two full English for a tenner here is a very good deal, and a very good breakfast it was, plus our dog the Wiemaraner Izzy could sit and watch the world go by as we eat. However, we had not thought to go for an evening meal, our mistake. Our Friday night meal started with breaded garlic mushrooms and autumn vegetable soup, both excellent, mains of gammon and haddock were classic pub food and both epic. Service by Beata and her young staff need a special mention, our two young waiters Sarah and Peter were extremely good and earn our highest marks for their care and attention to our needs. To visit Bourton and eat with wine for under £40 is remarkable, to eat to this standard of cuisine anywhere in this day and age is not to be missed. I would strongly recommend any visitors to Bourton to avail themselves to the Old Manse, you will not be disappointed.
