The hotel is situated in a very quiet location in the beautiful village of Bibury which is famous for its setting on the River Coln (including Arlington Row which are a group of ancient cottages dating back to the 16th Century). Both the exterior of the hotel and grounds are quite stunning plus there are some excellent walks actually from the hotel.
We made a very late 3 night booking (for that evening) at the Bibury Court Hotel and our only request was a room with a view of the garden. On arrival we were allocated room 26 which is in the eaves of the hotel and that had views of the garden on one side and the River Coln on the other though you had to be getting on for 6 foot tall to see anything as these were quite small high windows. The room was spacious with a separate hallway containing the wardrobe and dressing table and a bathroom with one of the longest and most comfortable baths we have ever had in a hotel. Like much of the hotel the décor in our room was a little tired and in need of some refurbishment.
All the meals we had at the hotel were very enjoyable including the first evening when the hotel experienced a 90 minute power cut at 6pm and so could only offer the bar menu that evening. Breakfast offered the usual choice of cereals and fruit juices, plus fruit salad, fresh strawberries and marinated apricots along with an excellent choice of freshly cooked porridge, English breakfast, kippers, Eggs Benedict – and more !. Dinner was a fixed menu with a choice of at least six starters and six main courses including lamb (which is probably the most tender I have ever had), pheasant, partridge, two fish (though no beef or chicken) with an emphasis on local produce.
Most of the staff we spoke were either Lithuanian or German (including the restaurant manager who seemed to do much more than run the restaurant !) all of whom were very enthusiastic and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble and we had good service in the restaurant, bar and lounge at all times. One notable items of service was to be offered a glass of complimentary champagne before dinner on my wife’s birthday which she celebrated whilst we were staying there.
After being out all day it was nice to come back and have afternoon tea in the lounge with it’s large open fire. Like the rest of the hotel the lounge had a very comfortable feel to it. Bibury Court Hotel doesn’t attempt to be posh (I think there are a number of pretentious hotels in the Cotswolds if you want this) but just homely and welcoming which is does rather well.
