“Great food & ambience - slow service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013 via mobile

Went for a 60th birthday celebration. Arrived at 8 for 8.30. Left in the bar until 9. First course at 9.20. Shared a bar table with a couple who were there before us and seated after us. No explanation of the delay - only asked if we wanted to buy more wine - we wanted food and said so. Thereafter the food and the overall service was great. Shame the slow start spoilt an otherwise great evening.

“back to it's good old self!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013

Wife and I stopped coming here about five years ago when they ripped out all the personality and we had a couple of dreadful experiences which included awful food and dreadful, lacadaisical service. Before that, this was the best restaurant in a 40 mile radius, and people would flock to it for its outstanding attention to detail, beautifully crafted food, outstanding wine list and the personal touch of the owners. I can't imagine a major family event that hasn't been celebrated here, including my engagement.
So you can imagine the trepidation when the sister announced it as the venue for her 30th - I prepared myself for slovenly attention and an overpriced, impersonal, average meal.
Well what a shocker, it's only gone back to it's former glory- and I'd dare to say it is even better than it was before. A quick re think of redecoration of the bar (which on first overhaul all those years ago resembled a happy eater) means you're welcomed with comfortable slate floors and a warming ambience. The drinks orders taken swiftly and more people than we needed making sure we were comfortable. An excellent menu with a fabulous wine list. The service was impeccable throughout, overseen by the suave and collected William. Once again they have gone back to the old days of not allowing you to move a muscle without offering help - I remember 5 years ago on my 2nd wedding anniversary having to carry not only the wine from the bar to the table, but the ice bucket as well!
The food was absolutely first class - most of us had the chateaubriand which was cooked to perfection. Waiters were in almost constant attendance without seeming intrusive. A request from one of the party for ketchup was not met with a raised eyebrow (well, not from the staff!!) and even an older guest's request for his lamb 'well done' was greeted with a 'customer is always right' attitude.
The appearance of the merry proprietor towards the end of the evening brings back that absolute personal touch that once made this restaurant famous. Heartily greeting his regulars and eyeing up the faces he kind-of recognises as having grown up through nights out in his hotel and restaurant group, he produces an imperial bottle of Sauternes and instructs his waiters to serve it to everyone on-the-house.
I'm so glad this place is back to what it was. Wife and I will be back there very soon!

“Makes you feel Royal.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

I return when ever I can, there is no where like it. It just makes you feel good as soon as you walk through the door. The excellent wine waiter that can choose the perfect wine for you. The flight of wine which is definitely something not to miss. The extensive wine list. The beautifully presented food, right down to the homemade biscuits that accompany the cheeseboard. Its just an experience worth repeating on a regular basis.

“Every time we come this place is perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

Each and every time we come here the staff always make it a pleasant experience. The food is beautiful and the wine list is fantastic. The setting right on the river is gorgeous and the beams inside are warming and cosy. I would recommend this time and time again and is my favourite restaurant in Suffolk.

“Lovely food, excellent staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

We visited on a Thursday evening which was surprisingly busy but not so busy that the service was affected. The staff are superb, every change to the menu we made they accommodated. The good was cooked to perfection , even though it is expensive I would highly recommend a visit.
