“Excellent value and good food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

What an excellent establishment, good beer and a reasonably priced menu! We regularly eat out in France and the menu is typical of a French country restaurant run by a chef/patron. There is a limited but imaginative fixed price lunch or a more expensive a la carte menu. The portions are typically French so if you are looking for a blow out, go to MacDonalds. We ate from the fixed price menu. The food was freshly prepared and obviously home made. We had a baked pepper and bean soup followed by perfectly cooked calves liver. My wife had plum and root ginger tart which was similar to a bakewell tart but with slithers of plum let into the frangiplan. (I am going to try and make this at home). The wine selection was reasonable with some good lower priced options. The service not too fast so there was time for converstion between courses sitting in front of the log fire. A very pleasant lunchtime experience. There are many pub/restaurants that aspire to this level of quality, few achieve it.

We celebrated our wedding anniversary at the Sun back in August, together with my sister and her husband. Before he retired, my brother-in-law was a master butcher, so he tends to know his stuff and is sometimes quite difficult to please. He also has a partiality for fish and on this occasion he ordered the sole. He has not stopped talking about it since!
For my part, I was thoroughly impressed with the wine list.
Service is excellent too, performed by a team of young, pleasant and well-trained staff.

Six of us stayed here this weekend to celebrate my mother in law's 60th. The service, ambience, food and drink were up there with the absolute best in the industry and the whole thing is just beautifully done. Our room ('Phaethon') was stunning, the staff let us lock up bikes in their shed / office (we cycled up from London), the food in te restaurant was just stunning, better than most modern euro / British restaurants in London. Duck hearts were sublime, Brill was perfectly cooked and served. Wine list is incredible, bar / snug area beautiful. The whole thing is worth every damn penny you've got. Chapeau to the owners and staff, you deserve an award for what you've achieved here!

Totally agree with other comments on menu. Over fussy, not really any real choice. Lack of fresh vegetables made plate look extremely empty.Just one vegetable is unacceptable. At lunch no one seemed to be in charge. One waitress unable to explain menu, probably English not her first language. Service very poor, spoons not provided for soup, we had to ask, then found soup luke warm. A very long wait between ordering and first course arriving. Would not recommend and will not be returning which is a great pity as we live locally.

We stayed in the "Phaethan" room last Thursday & Friday, Sept. 6 & 7. Very pleasantly suprised at how much attention to little details the innkeeper Piers Baker made in our room in his renovations. After traveling for 14 days in Ireland, Scotland & now finally England I would rate this bed the 2nd most comfortable one (only to the Shelbourne in Dublin). We stayed at Park Hotel Kenmare and was much disappointed in their bedding (too hard, use of 2 twin beds to make a king, pillows flat and useless....) and payed much more money per night. Other expensive properties were equally as bad. Here we finally felt refreshed with the beautiful egyptian linens, and 3 fluffy pillows pp and spring king bed (not 2 twins together). Our view of the church across the street was superb. We experienced Indian Summer and had the windows open all day and evening and got nice cross breezes and cool evenings and enjoyed the church bells announcing every hour. Our bathroom did not have a true shower, but you could easily use the shower wand in the cast iron tub and stand while bathing or take a bath. We did here evening noises in the pub underneath our room, but it added to the enjoyment of the overall experience. The town was lovely to visit (other inns, restaurants and shops) and this makes for a very enjoyable stay in Essex England. The restaurant was very pretty with more attention to little details that interior designers would enjoy. From the comfort of the chairs, linens on tables, fresh flowers, pleasing color pallets...very pretty. The bar is a local's favorite and we met some nice people in it. Also much sitting and patio tables in the rear outside.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask if you have a true shower, and where your room is located if noise bothers you. A...

Stayed here last Saturday evening attending family party at Le Tolbooth. Tried to book into La Maison who were full due a wedding. Receptionist at Maison very snooty and unhelpful and would not recommend anywhere locally. But luckily we found the Sun. Lovely young ladies welcomed us, we stayed in Wards. Character full room very well modernised, very comfortable bed. One of the delightful waitresses even took us to the Tolbooth in her own car as we couldnt get a taxi and the Tolbooth too busy to collect us ( which we were not expecting them to do but we were told by the waitresses at the Sun that the Tolbooth usually do). Unbelievably helpful of them to take us to the Tolbooth. The breakfast next morning was first class.Local produce, home cooked breakfast and small but select buffet. Would highly recommend this place, lovely location right in the centre of Dedham with its tea shops and craft shops. We will be back when we next visit family in the area. Thankyou.

Room Tip: We asked for a quiet room and were given "Wards"
