“Small but Interesting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

This Martello Tower houses the ethnography of a darker side of Rye. Smells dank on entering, but I guess the workhouse inmates and the prisoners thought so too.

“Interesting bit of history, worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2012

Recently visited Ypres Tower also referred to as Rye Castle on a day out to Rye. It is a must-see in th area, has an interesing history, reasonably priced and what made it most enjoyable was the gentleman working the desk who was very welcoming and knowledgeable and genuinely wanted to tell each person that entered all about the history.

“Rye Castle Museum, or Ypres Tower”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2012

Ypres Tower, often called Rye Castle, is a Norman structure built in the twelfth century. Norman architecture isn't my favourite, but I did find the 'Gun Gardens' (cannons and such) surrounding it more pleasant than I had imagined. It isn't my favourite part of Rye, but anywhere in Rye is better than....well, you name it.

“Lovely Fort”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012

The castle museum was a little sparse in terms of historic weaponry and artefacts etc, but overall it was a pleasure to walk round. From near the top of the fort and the Gun Gardens was a lovely view, with a peaceful garden below. A good place to explore when walking round the main town.

“Interesting and child friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2012

Kids go free, when accompanied by an adult, adults pay £3 eachm which I consider to be good value for money, funds help to maintain the site, which is run mainly by volunteers.
Yes, it is small, but if you take your time and make the best of it, it is enjoyable. My 5 year old son loved the map on the brochure, and he lead us to the different areas. Our favourite was the basement trying on helmets, feeling chain mail and the weight of swords and shields. Easy climb up the tower and great view over Romney marshes.
All kids enjoyed climbing on the cannons outside.
A great way to teach kids about history
