We stayed here for one night on the misunderstanding that we thought it was £85 for a room, which we thought would be ok, bearing in mind where it was situated, and the amenities it was offering. In actual fact it was £85 per person (in small print it does say this) for the Deluxe Superior, of course one would expect sheer luxury (to a degree) for this ridiculous price. The room was a nice size with windows front/back and side of the hotel presenting a good 'panoramic' view of Rye, good start if you can just get over the fact it is very pink and flowery (faded at that), never mind it is just a base for our visit, but one would expect it to be a bit cleaner for the price, maybe a hoover and move the chair when you do it ! Perhaps a little dusting would help Asthma sufferers too....I think a lot of money has been spent on all the toiletries/Magazines/Merchandise rather than decorating and building repairs - two wall lamps with different size bulbs sticking out ?? Shabby DIY around the sink, painted plug sockets that you can't move or switch off, a TV cupboard made from MDF painted white and home made ?? Not to be too negative... it had a nice Pool, and the Sauna was good, didn't like the garden chair in the 'Gas Chamber' though, oh sorry Steam Room. The breakfast was very nice and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly, it is definitely one for the elderly, infact one person said it resembled a rich persons nursing home. I have to agree with the review from the member from Paris...but the overwhelming smell was cigarettes...You have to stay there though to get your own experience, it wasn't horrific but it could of been better value for the money that's all.....our next night was spent in the Windmill......bliss.. value for money and fresh air !!

One night, £130. Hugely overpriced. Room was clean, but very dated and smelt of bleach/chlorine. Staff wore dental surgery outfits, and made you feel about as welcome. Rye is nice, and looking around, we saw plenty of better places to stay that will also cost you less.

“Pretty in pink, we liked it!”

We stayed at the Rye Lodge for two nights with our 11 month old daughter. They weren't overly friendly when I booked it over the phone and after reading the reviews on Tripadvisor I was a little bit worried.

However, we were very pleased with our stay. We were made to feel very welcome with our baby and all. The hotel had a real English, family owned, cosy feeling. It is very far from the today's modern style decorated hotels, but in twee old Rye it kind of makes sense.

Funnily enough, like the previous reviewer we stayed in room 12. It certainly was a symphony in pink and white but totally in keeping with the vision that someone had clearly had for the whole hotel. I agree the the shower room was miniscule, in fact possibly the smallest I've ever seen, but it did the job and was clean as was the room.

Breakfast was very nice, especially the scrambled eggs.

The swimmingpool was a nice extra, as was the car park. Parking seemed fairly tight in Rye so it was nice not to have to worry about it.

We went to Rye Harbour nature reserve, very impressive. We ate at the Fish Cafe which was very nice although a bit impersonal. We also ate at the Mint Restaurant (a very nice dining room at the back of the Standard Inn on the Mint) which was lovely, really unusual food and lovely chef doubling up as waiter that night.

“Nightmare on Barbie Street!!!!”

Rye Lodge Hotel

Oct 11, 2005

We have just got back from a one night stay at the Rye Lodge Hotel. We stayed in room 12 (Mersault).

The decoration consisted of pink lampshades, pink head boards on the bed, pink wallpaper, false white columns and fake French furniture. Barbie might like it!!!

The whole hotel stunk of a floral airspray. We were shown to our room and headed straight for the open window just so we could breathe fresh air again!!!

Our bathroom was microscopic. A shower, a basin and a wc had been crammed into 1.5 square metres!!! And the light didn't work properly.

The purple carpet had not been hoovered before our arrival. There were biscuit crums and hairs on the carpet.

Magazines (dating back to 2002) and useless guide books took up all available table space.

At night, whenever the occupants of the bedroom above moved about the floorboards creeked loudly. They enjoyed watching the TV with the volume turned up to the maximum. They then decided to rearrange the furniture until about midnight.

We finally got off to sleep, but were awoken abruptly at 2 AM by the screeching of the fire alarm!!!!

My friend got dressed quickly and left the room to find out what the hell was going on!!! It turned out to be a false alarm.

The next day feeling a bit weary after a bad night's sleep, we went downstairs to have breakfast (included in the price). The breakfast room was full, mainly with senior citizens. The service was not speedy.

After breakfast, we went to the reception to find out why the fire alarm went off. We were told that a fly had flown into the fire detector in the swimming pool area and that had set off the fire alarm!!! We did not receive an apology for the inconvenience caused.

We packed our bags, paid our bill and left promptly.

Price paid for double room : 105 British Pounds.

“Over-rated”

Arrived in room ('Loire') that smelt strongly of stale cigarette smoke. Opened windows to clear smell and staff installed ioniser - should not be necessary. Could not leave windows open when not in room; a verandah is situated immediately below them, easily accessible from the road, posing security problem. Noise from passing traffic intruded if windows were opened when we were in the room. Bed comfortable, bathroom clean but nothing special.

Atmosphere was reminiscent of a care home. On first afternoon, internal doors of two rooms opposite left open (for ventilation? - it was very hot): one room contained elderly occupant enjoying gin and tonic, a second room contained another elderly lady propped up in bed. When we returned later, doors were closed but did not see inmates again!

Breakfast content OK, but have had much better, even in hotel chains. Service could be more efficient - we were brought somebody else's breakfast on second morning. Whilst having breakfast (when correct order was eventually brought), other guests were complaining loudly of a smell in their room from a large wet patch on the floor.

Overall, this hotel claims to be 'distinguished' and is plastered with DIY-style 'Corinthic' - or are they 'Ionian'? - columns that are pretentious, to say the least. Several ostentatious cars with personalised number plates, conspicuous in the car park and presumably belonging to the hotel's owners, say it all. 'Ordinary' is a more appropriate adjective.
