“Great find”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2009

My family and I were visiting relatives in Lewes and they recommended the Real Eating Company for Sunday lunch. The place was heaving when we arrived which we thought was a good sign - and it was. We had a very good lunch there. Food was good, especially the roast, and the kids were happy with their burger and roast pork. The rice pudding with jam for pudding was especially good, very creamy. Service was friendly and efficient. We eat out a lot in London and would be more than happy to have this kind of place nearby.

“Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2009

Expensive and a large room that looks horribly empty if not enough people in. Thinks it is cutting edge, but the food doesn't justify the prices. You will have a better time at the Gardners Arms pub across the road, although the ambience is a little different

“Nice building, average food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2009

We tried this restaurant out primarily to see if we liked it for our wedding feast, but were somewhat disappointed. THe decor is very pleasant, with a good outdoor space, but we felt the food didn't really match the price or the ambience. The waitress charmingly said that a previous customer that day had complained about portion sizes - for a 3-course meal (which we had) they were great, but for just a main course they are a bit small for the cost. Given that there are other good restaurants in Lewes, we were a bit disappointed with the quality of this one.

“Friendly staff, good food, lively atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2009

We chanced upon this restaurant while wandering around Lewes looking for somewhere to eat on a saturday night. We hadn't booked but the Maitre De was very friendly and welcoming. It had a nice lively atmosphere without being too noisy.

A good selection of modern british dishes at pretty reasonable prices for this quality.

“A sad dining experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2009

Four of us ate in the restaurant last night - a Thursday, arriving at the pre-booked time of 7.30pm. In common with several other diners we had previously been given vouchers that stated " July Offer. 50% off food bill. Tuesday to Thursday dinner 6.30 - 9pm" We had seen the dinner menu in the restaurant window during the day and decided to go that evening to try it.

We were surprised when given menus at the table to find items missing when compared with the menu in the window. For example all beef/steak dishes were missing - in fact the only red meat on our menu was lamb, to which one of our party is allergic. The Maitre D' explained that they could not offer everything on the 50%-off deal. Fair enough, we thought, if this had been explained on the voucher.

But missing items from our menu were not the only things missing. One of our party ordered the smoked fish platter as a starter, the contents of which were detailed on our menu, only to find one item missing. He asked for a menu to be brought back so he could check. The Maitr D' agreed and there was a missing item, and it was duly brought. I had ordered the charcouterie platter which, to say the least, was miniscule.

Two of our party ordered mussels in white wine and cream as a starter. When they arrived there was virtually no discernable liquid ,and the cream was baked in lumps on to the shells of the mussels, several of which were not open. The Maitre D' agreed that the dish was not correctly cooked and that we would not be charged for them.

It took some three hours to serve us - we left the restaurant at 10.30 pm - we did not wait for coffee.

Our "50%" meal for four diners, two of whom were not charged for their starters, and two bottles of wine, was almost £100, which imples that the full cost would have been around £170.00 (the 50% deal did not relate to wine). This would have been seriously overpriced for what we had, quite apart from the comments above.

One good thing was the wine which was excellent and not overpriced.
