“Cheap and nasty food!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2013 via mobile

It was jam packed on a busy bank holiday so I didnt expect the service to be good.

I ordered the all day breakfast and the sausages were "DISGUSTING"! Stay away from any meat because my girlfriends steak was an Iceland special£1 deal!

Should've gone to specsavers that day

“A disappointment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

We have heard great things about this restaurant, but were very disappointed.
The food was okay, portions a good size. The chips were tasty but my sons sausage was very cheap quality. I had huss, which was delicious but had a very thick batter. My husband was not very impressed with the cod, said he'd had better locally, but he ate it all. So overall the food was satisfactory.
Wish I could say the same for the atmosphere. There was no soul to the place, and we spent the entire time there listening to an argument in the kitchen. Thankfully it was in a foreign language so we didn't understand all that was being said but it was a heated debated...
Another customer complained about the noise, but the waitress just shrugged her shoulders.
We will not be returning.

“Lovely again ...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2013

With a sunny Bank Holiday it was a struggle getting a table but we managed to get one outside eventually. We ordered four large Cod 'n Chips and even with every table inside and out full up, it only took about 15 - 20 minutes. Everything on the plate was freshly cooked and crispy and the portion size was just right even for a big eater like me. Four empty plates later and we all agreed it was lovely. The young waitresses were run off their feet but this didn't stop them checking that everyone was ok and didn't require anything.

“Not as Good As it Used to be”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2013

We have been using the Mermaid for over 17 years and have noticed a steady decline in their standard of fish & chips over the past few years. This used to be the best place, or is it plaice, in Hastings for fish & chips, but no longer so unfortunately. As someone remarked earlier, although the fish is very fresh, the batter was over-cooked and very hard. Also the chips are no longer as crisp on the outside as they used to be. Also there was no haddock available on the day we ate there. The waitresses are very friendly and efficient.

“It's "what it says on the tin"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2013

Heard about the fantastic fish and chips in Hastings - this cafe did not disappoint. We sat outside and enjoyed the first early evening sun of the year.

Our server was friendly and the fish and chips took a little while to arrive but I find this reassuring - means it is cooked freshly and it certainly was the best fish and chips I have had in a long while. Crispy batter, flaky white fish, tasty chips and best of all crispy bits from the fryer.

There are 3 portion sizes - medium, large and extra large. The medium was plenty for us.
